This selection from the Roman Missal at Christmas is sung near the beginning of Mass at the Chapel of Saint Cuthbert at Ushaw College in 1960. The base video was produced by Tyne-Tees Television, one of the regional divisions of ITV (The Independent Television Service).

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” (The Gospel of Saint Luke 2:14). The Gloria is an example of, " private psalms," which were compositions by individuals to imitate a Psalm. Saint Hilary of Poitiers [b.310 – d. 367], Bishop of Poitiers and a Doctor of the Church, contributed to the writing of the remainder of the Gloria from what he had learned in the East in the year 359 A.D.

The complete lyrics are as follows:

“Gloria in excelsis Deo. Et in terra рах hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Deus Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite, Jesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus. Tu solus Dominus. Tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu, in gloria Dei Patris. Amen.”

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth реасе to men of good will. We praise Thee; we Ыess Thee; we adore Thee; we glorify Thee. We give Thee thanks for Thy great glory, О Lord God,
heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. О Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father. Thou, who takest away the sins of the world; have mercy on us. Thou, who takest away the sins of the world; receive our prayer. Thou, who sittest at the right
hand of the Father; have mercy on us. For Thou alone art holy; Thou alone art the Lord; Thou alone art the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.”

The Chapel of Saint Cuthbert was designed by Dunn and Hansom, and was opened in 1884 near the village of Ushaw Moor, County Durham, England. The boarding education at Ushaw College began at age 11 for both junior seminary and lay boys. Some of the students continued their education at Ushaw College to eventually become Roman Catholic priests in the United Kingdom and in the Commonwealth of Nations.

Between 1959 and 1971, the late choirmaster Reverend Monsignor Canon Laurence Hollis recorded hundreds of chapel services.

The current use of the chapel is under the oversight of Reverend Father David Coxon of the Church of Saint Joseph in Ushaw Moor.
