John Abraham was born to Abraham John and mother Firoza Irani on 17 December 1972 in Mumbai. His father is an architect by profession while his mother is a homemaker. He has a younger brother Alan Abraham who is also an architect. His father is a Syrian Christian from Aluva in Kerala while his mother belongs to a Zoroastrian Parsi family that hails from South Gujarat. He was named Farhan by his mother's family. John studied at Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai and did his graduation in economics from Jai Hind College.  He pursued MBA from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.
John's modeling career began after he won Gladrags Manhunt competition in 1999 and finished as the first runner-up in Gladrags Manhunt International.  He got signed by Cary Models in Singapore and did a fair amount of work there, and later in Hong Kong, London, and New York. He was set to debut with Rahul Rawail directorial film "Is Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon" but the film got shelved.

John's debut film was "Jism" that released was released on 17th January 2003. According to Box Office India, the film minted over eighty-one million Rupees and was labeled as a hit. In this film, his voice was dubbed by another actor.         After "Jism", John appeared in "Saaya" and "Aetbaar" released on 4th July 2003 and 23rd January 2004. "Saaya" earned thirty-two million three hundred fifty thousand rupees and was said to be a flop while "Aetbaar" was said to be a disaster.On 30th January 2004, his film "Paap" was released where he was seen with actress Udita Goswami. The film turned out to be a flop at the box office.  He next featured in Ahmed Khan directorial "Lakeer" which was released on 14th May 2004 and earned forty-seven million nine hundred fifty thousand Rupees and again said to be a disaster.  But, on 27th August 2004, he delivered a super hit film "Dhoom" which earned three hundred sixteen million rupees. His next hit film was "Garam Masala" that released on 2nd November 2005. In this comedy film, he was seen with Akshay Kumar.  

Between the two hits, he worked in Madhoshi, Elaan, Karam, Kaal, and Viruddh. In 2006, he was seen in Zinda, Taxi Number 9 2 11 (Nau do gyarah), Baabul, and Kabul Express. According to Box Office India, apart from "Taxi Number 9 2 11 (Nau do gyarah)" - which was labeled as semi-hit - no other film performed well that year. In 2007, he worked in "Salaam-E-Ishq" with Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, and Vidya Balan.
