Lyra Belacqua is 11 years old and lives at Jordan College in Oxford, England. Bright and lively, the girl spends her days running around the city with her 'daimon' Pantalaimon (an alter ego in the form of an animal) and her friend Roger. One day, Lyra overhears a conversation between her uncle Lord Asriel, some professors from the university and a member of the Magisterium about a mysterious 'Dust' that is found only in the Arctic and that allows contact between parallel worlds. In the meantime, some children from Oxford, including Roger, inexplicably disappear and Lyra meets the charming Mrs Coulter, who is part of the 'General Intendancy for the Oblation' and who invites her to go with her on an adventurous mission in the Arctic. Before leaving the College, Lyra is given custody of an Alethiometer, a rare and precious object that can answer the most varied questions but that only a select few are able to interpret. However, Mrs Coulter has no intention of taking Lyra to the cold lands of the North Pole and soon arouses dark suspicions in the little girl who escapes from the golden prison in which she has been locked up. Thus begins for Lyra an incredible adventure that will bring her into contact with a fantastic world in which Gypsies, armed bears, witches and a balloonist will help her defeat the evil Gobblers and finally discover the secrets of her origins and her very important role in the future of the universe.
