The capture of five illegal immigrants has been caught on camera as officers and a dog found them hiding among clothes trying to cross the Spanish border. The incident took place during a routine control stop by members of the Spanish Civil Guard in the port of Melilla, southern Spain on the northern African side of the Mediterranean on 8th October at 8.30 am. The officers were checking loading containers heading between Melilla city and the Spanish peninsula for stowaways. According to a Civil Guard press statement obtained by Real Press, there was suspicion over a punt carrying a huge amount of clothing in sacks, so they deployed a sniffer dog. A Spanish Civil Guard spokesman told Real Press that the dog - Wilma, female - was essential as the migrants were in a difficult access area. Wilma was filmed nipping through the unstable sacks, each weighing up to 100 kilos (220 pounds) to show her handlers where the men were by barking at them. Officers then worked their way toward the men by meticulously removing the sacks until they got to the hiding spots. The hiding spots were built of wood in areas known as “chimneys”. Five adult males were recovered. All were in good health but did not have any documentation. Their nationality is still unknown.
