How Orange is contributing to a wide-spread vaccine

Orange Côte d’Ivoire, in partnership with GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance and the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has set up a platform for monitoring the vaccination schedule for pregnant women and children under the age of one in order to reduce the vaccination dropout rate, which negatively impacts overall immunity coverage.

M-VACCIN is a mobile app that allows healthcare professionals to enrol pregnant women and newborn babies, create a vaccination record, inform parents about the importance of vaccination and monitor their appointment schedule by using text and voice messaging to send appointment reminders in local languages.

The project aims to improve monitoring among unimmunised children and pregnant women and therefore increase the national immunity rate.
The application allows health professionals to identify potential dropouts so they can organise targeted communications such as personalised appointment reminders through text and voice messaging in local languages. What’s more, the platform provides access to reliable data so as to inform vaccination strategies in local health authorities and at a central level.

The project focuses on 50 health districts for a period of 5 years.
OCI’s role has been to develop the M-VACCIN platform and provide devices, telecoms services and the necessary infrastructure to deploy the project. It has also supported a communication campaign and provided on-the-ground support to increase engagement and adoption.

Between January and August 2020, more than 7,000 mothers were registered in the first three targeted health districts, which is already evidence of the solution’s effectiveness.
Today, the platform could be used more widely, for example monitoring and raising awareness of chronic diseases such as HIV, tuberculosis and cancer.
