Apple Korea has reached a deal with the Korea Fair Trade Commission... under which it's offering to pay tens of millions of dollars to make up for the anti-competitive practices it's engaged in... dealing with its local competitors and consumers.
Kim Dami has the details.
To compensate for its unfair treatment of local mobile carriers, Apple Korea has proposed a deal worth almost 84 million dollars.
It was announced Monday by the Korea Fair Trade Commission, which negotiated the deal.
"Under the proposal, Apple will have to share in the costs of promoting its phones, and stop making local carriers pay the full cost of its warranties. And it includes a plan worth 84 million dollars to improve its services for consumers and to support local SMEs."
The tech giant is notorious in Korea for using its market power to take advantage of its local partners.
For example, it has exercised total control over the way local carriers advertise the iPhone, even dictating the wording of them and how long the carriers' logos can appear on screen.
But if they wanted to sell iPhones, these carriers had no choice but to accept.
Now, they'll have more of a voice in where the ads are shown and what they contain.
Apple had also made them pay the full cost of running the ads, but now it's going to contribute.
For iPhone users, Apple will provide 10 percent discounts on repairs.
It's also going to spend 34 million dollars to establish R&D support centers for local SMEs involved in smartphone manufacturing.
The relevant parties will discuss whether to accept Apple Korea's proposal and make a decision by October 3rd.
