For almost 200 years the British controlled India. It started out with the East India Company from about 1765. In 1857 there was a countrywide revolt which, which failed to shake off the English rule but transferred the power from the company to the crown. Only after continued pressure and new leaders did the British finally grant India it's Independence in 1947.

अंग्रेजों से ये आजादी हमें एक-दो दिन नहीं बल्कि पूरे 200 साल के संघर्ष के बाद मिली. जिसमें लाखों लोगों को अपनी बलिदानी देनी पड़ी. लेकिन क्या कभी आपने सोचा है कि भारत को आज़ादी 1946 या 48 में क्यों नहीं मिली? 15 अगस्त की जगह किसी और तारीख़ पर क्यों नहीं मिली? और क्यों पहले प्रधानमंत्री जवाहरलाल नेहरू ने आधी रात को आज़ादी और 'नई सुबह' की घोषणा की? भारत के स्वतंत्रता दिवस की 74वीं सालगिरह से पहले हमें ये जरूर जाननी चाहिए.
