As the first woman Vice Presidential candidate, Geraldine Ferraro made history in an otherwise forgettable election year in 1984.
But since then, few candidates have run with a woman on the ticket and the role of President, or vice president has not gone to a woman.
John McCain picked Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008, a controversial pick but Palin was still only the second woman to run for this all-important job in US history.
