Forest officials patrolling the Mudumalai Forest Range in Southern India witnessed the rare sight of a tiger hunting an elephant and dragging away the body of the freshly killed calf. (June 28)

Large predators like lions and tigers steer clear of elephants, which are too big and strong. But calves, which stray from the herd and get lost, become easy prey.

Elephant herds are very protective of their calves, with all adult members taking collective responsibility for their safety. But during brisk migrations on difficult terrain, calves tend to get lost in the chaos.
