Irfan Pathan said former India skipper MS Dhoni used to get excited easily when he took over as India captain, however, the wicketkeeper-batsman grew calmer as years went by and he gained experience. Irfan, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket this year, added that MS Dhoni started trusting his spin bowlers with time and gained the belief that they could win matches for him. "In 2007, it was the first time and you understand that when you are given a big responsibility of leading a team, you get excited," said when asked what was the difference between MS Dhoni of 2007 and 2013.

इरफ़ान पठान और एमएस धोनी, एक ही दौर में भारतीय टीम में आए थे. हालांकि धोनी से पहले ही इरफ़ान पठान को इंडिया के लिए खेलने का मौका मिल गया था. टेस्ट क्रिकेट में उन्होंने 2003 में ही डेब्यू किया था. पर अंतर ज्यादा नहीं था. एक ही समय पर धोनी और पठान भारत के लिए खेले. लेकिन, करियर ग्राफ किसका बढ़ा इसके बारे में बताने की जरूरत नहीं है. धोनी को डेब्यू के तीन साल बाद ही यानी 2007 में टी20 की कप्तानी मिल गयी और उन्होंने विश्वकप जीता दिया. जब कप्तान बने तो धोनी गेंदबाजों पर भरोसा नहीं दिखाते थे. ऐसा कहना है उनके पूर्व साथी खिलाड़ी इरफ़ान पठान का. इरफान पठान ने खुलासा किया कि महेंद्र सिंह धोनी ने 2007 में जब अपना कप्तानी कार्यकाल शुरू किया था तब वो अपने गेंदबाजों पर नियंत्रण करना पसंद करते थे.
