City Council Vows to Dismantle
City’s Police Department Councilman Jeremiah Ellison
said that the council will work to
disband MPD in its “current iteration.” Councilman Jeremiah Ellison, via NBC News Ellison added that eight or
nine council members had
agreed to the move. The announcement follows weeks of global unrest as a result of the in-custody killing of George Floyd by former police officer Derek Chauvin. Council president Lisa Bender also vowed to
"re-create systems of public safety that actually
keep us safe" during a community meeting.
