00:00The plane has crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center.
00:30You're talking about a large passenger commercial jet.
00:33A large passenger commercial jet.
00:34The plane was slightly on its side.
00:35It came in like a spear. It just speared through the building.
00:38Holy smoke, the building I'm supposed to be in is on fire.
00:43Suddenly, there was a second roar that came out of the sky, and another plane barreled into the other.
00:53Today, we've had a national tragedy.
00:56Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center.
01:01There was smoke everywhere, and people are jumping out the windows over there.
01:04They're jumping out the windows, I guess, because they're trying to save themselves. I don't know.
01:09There has just been a huge explosion, a cascade of sparks and fire.
01:15And I'll tell you that I can't see that second tower.
01:20September 11, 2001 changed the world forever.
01:24As we watched in horror, the terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon.
01:31United Flight 93 was headed for Washington, D.C.
01:34Its target was the White House.
01:38If it were not for the heroic actions of a few men, such as Tom Burnett, 36, who gave his life, hundreds more would have died.
01:54The first person to get word that that plane was in trouble is my guest this morning, when she got a telephone call from her husband.
02:06Nina Burnett, the widow, his mother with their three children, two twin girls, and a younger child.
02:14Welcome her now, please, with me.
02:25Tell us about Tom. What kind of a man was he, Dina?
02:29He was a remarkable man. He had heartfelt compassion.
02:35He was funny.
02:38He was an intelligent man who was intuitive and analytical.
02:45He was a leader.
02:47He loved his family, and he had great faith in God.
02:51You okay? Can I get you anything?
02:55I don't want to take this flight.
02:57It just doesn't feel right leaving town right now with you not feeling well and the baby.
03:03You know what? I am going to be just fine.
03:07Wait and see.
03:12I love you, sir.
03:14I love you.
03:16And I love you.
03:20Sixty, even a hundred times more.
03:26I understand he was probably one of the first to make an outside telephone call from the plane.
03:32Can you tell us about that?
03:33Yes. The children and I began our morning very early that day.
03:37It was about six o'clock when we woke up, and I immediately turned on the television to check the weather
03:43and saw that the World Trade Center had been hit by an airplane.
03:47And I was very concerned about Tom, knowing he was in New York City.
03:51At 6.27 that morning, a phone call came in from Tom's cell phone.
03:56Hello?
03:57And because it was on his cell phone, I thought that he was fine.
04:00And my first words to him were,
04:02It's so good to hear your voice.
04:04Dina, our plane's been hijacked. Listen to me, Dina. There's no time.
04:07And he began going into detail about what was taking place on the plane.
04:12Something's wrong.
04:14What the heck is going on back there?
04:16Something evil's happened right now.
04:21I love you. I love you. Tell the boys I love them.
04:23They told me they had knifed a guy, that there was a bomb on board.
04:27You've got to let the authorities know.
04:30I'll call you back as soon as I can.
04:32Tom?
04:33I'm sorry.
04:39He hung up, and I called 911 and was connected to the FBI.
04:45He called three other times that morning.
04:48Tom?
04:49Each phone call lasting about one minute or less.
04:51The news is saying that two planes just crashed into the Twin Towers.
04:54And he shared that information with the people around him.
04:57He began asking questions, analyzing the situation,
05:01assessing the problem, and trying to solve it.
05:03Looks like my husband's on the... Hold on, hold on.
05:06Tom?
05:07Did you get hold of anybody?
05:08Yes, I'm on the other line with them right now.
05:10Let them know these jerks are planning to crash this plane too.
05:13Trying to make a plan.
05:15Baby, are you okay?
05:17We're going to have to do something soon.
05:19We're heading towards the White House as far as we can tell.
05:22Tom!
05:24Tom!
05:27They're going to crash the plane!
05:29You've got to do something!
05:31And on the fourth phone call,
05:34he let me know that they were waiting until they were over a rural area
05:37before they were going to act.
05:39The three of us are about to make our move.
05:41You've got to know and prepare yourself.
05:44It looks like we're going to die.
05:49Don't say that.
05:50Just know that no matter what happens, I love you.
05:53Tom!
05:55I asked him if there was anything else I could do.
05:58Tom, what can I do?
06:03He said pray, Dina.
06:08Just pray.
06:11Pray, Dina.
06:13Pray.
06:15Tom!
06:19Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
06:22God!
06:23Thy kingdom come,
06:24thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
06:29Okay, let's roll.
06:47When you heard about the plane crash,
06:49how did you hear that?
06:52The police were there.
06:54The fire department was there.
06:55The FBI was there.
06:57They were reporting another plane crash.
07:08Miss Burnett, I have bad news.
07:11Your husband was on that plane and he died.
07:15And I turned to the policemen and asked them
07:19And I turned to the policemen and asked if that was Tom's flight.
07:24And he said yes.
07:28No.
07:31No!
07:38How did you break the news to your twin girl, six years old?
07:43A friend picked them up from school,
07:45brought them home about five o'clock that evening.
07:47I sat them down on the bed.
07:49What's wrong, Mommy?
07:52Where was Daddy?
07:54Where was Daddy?
07:55And we prayed that God would give us strength
08:01and allow me to answer their questions.
08:04Maybe there were some bad guys on Daddy's plane.
08:07Yeah.
08:10And they crashed it.
08:13And everybody missed.
08:15Everybody died, honey.
08:17And Daddy, too?
08:20Yeah.
08:22And they began to cry.
08:24They knew what death meant.
08:28And they began to ask questions.
08:30They wanted to know where he was.
08:34Daddy's in heaven.
08:35And I told them he was in heaven with Jesus
08:37and that that was a good place to be.
08:40They asked if they could send him a letter.
08:43They asked if they could talk to him on his cell phone.
08:49And I explained to them that he was helping God now
08:55and that his work was very important
08:57and that we were here on earth to carry on God's plan for us
09:02and that someday we would see him again.
09:06What a beautiful, perfect faith.
09:09Thank you, Jesus Christ, for being his Savior and yours.
09:17Day of Miracles is not only about those
09:19who miraculously survived this horrific event, but why.
09:24The building escort, who had never missed a day of work
09:27in his entire career, suddenly comes down with a fever.
09:31What do you think you're doing?
09:33I have not missed a day of work in ten years.
09:37I'm not about to, just because of a little fever.
09:41And besides, I have to be there when the dignitaries arrive.
09:48What do you think you're doing?
09:50Get back up here.
09:51You're in no condition to go anywhere.
09:54You can't be around others.
09:56You might be infectious.
09:58You can't be around others.
09:59You might be infectious.
10:01Just stay here.
10:12You had been doing a Bible study now for several years
10:15at the World Trade Center.
10:17At the Bible study, a week before the tragedy,
10:22the Bible teacher was Dick Arthur.
10:24There was eight men there, and they said,
10:26what's the Bible study about, Dick?
10:28And he said, the rapture.
10:29And four of the men that were young said, I'm ready to go.
10:34And the other four were like older, my age,
10:36and had grandchildren.
10:38The four that said they were ready to go died.
10:40He got them, gathered them together, and he told them,
10:43if you accept Jesus as your Savior,
10:46you'll be in heaven in a few minutes.
10:48How do you know this?
10:49Because after they accepted Christ,
10:52he told them to call their families.
10:54In the moments remaining, go to the phones.
10:56Call your dear ones.
10:57Be not afraid.
10:58And tell your dear ones, be not afraid.
11:00And not to sorrow, for we go to a glorious reunion
11:04with our Creator.
11:06The timing of these prayers is particularly important
11:09and dear to God, because this morning will be remembered
11:13by millions to the entire United States
11:16as one of the disasters of all time.
11:21Hi, I'm Cal Bramer.
11:23For many people, prayer is a personal conversation with God.
11:27A plea for God's help in making something
11:29they're desperately wishing for come true.
11:32And for many of those same people,
11:34prayer is often a last resort when tragedy strikes.
11:38Few of us know what it is to cry to God
11:40from the depths of our hearts when all else has failed
11:43and to hear God answer.
11:45And often, it takes a terrible tragedy to bring people
11:48to a belief in the power of prayer.
11:51One person who lived through tragedy
11:53and cried out to God in prayer is Janelle Guzman.
12:00My whole life just flashed right before me.
12:07I knew to myself, I honestly felt that
12:11I wasn't going to get out alive.
12:15I knew exactly where I was going,
12:18and I was going to hell,
12:20because I knew I wasn't right with God at that time.
12:24Janelle Guzman lived life on the wild side.
12:27She would be the first to admit it.
12:30I love to party, love dancing,
12:33love dressing up sexy, going out there,
12:36you know, being the center of attraction.
12:39In fact, the morning of September 11,
12:42little did she know,
12:44her life was about to change forever.
12:47Without any warning, the building just started to shake,
12:51and I wasn't really scared at that time,
12:54because I thought probably it was an earthquake, you know,
12:57so I just stood there, not moving, I just stood there
13:00and waited until it finally stopped.
13:02And when it did stop, I just went over to the window,
13:06and I saw the bits of debris and stuff, you know, falling down.
13:10Once she found out that Tower One had been hit by a plane,
13:14she started running down the 64 flights of stairs.
13:17I stopped on the 13th floor,
13:20and without a warning or a sign or anything at all,
13:25I just felt an explosion,
13:28and the place went completely dark and dusty.
13:32I was feeling so helpless.
13:35I couldn't move, so I just stood there,
13:39face down, with the thought that I'm going to die,
13:44this is it, this is it for me.
13:46Janelle was trapped and buried alive
13:48under the rubble of the collapsed tower.
13:51I thought I was dreaming when I woke up.
13:54I was like spitting on dust, and I said,
13:57oh my gosh, this is not a dream, this is really happening,
14:01this is real.
14:03And still, I didn't pray.
14:06Unable to move, and hardly able to breathe,
14:09she knew she was dying,
14:11and there was only one place for her to turn.
14:14And then my whole denouement just changed right there and then,
14:18and I said, God, I don't want to die, you know,
14:22give me that second chance, you know, save my life,
14:25I need to be with my family.
14:28Under the fallen building, alone and exhausted,
14:32Janelle began talking to God in a way that was entirely new to her.
14:37I just take a deep breath, and I said to myself,
14:40oh God, give me the strength to pull my head out from the concrete pillar.
14:45I just pulled it with all my might, and I just yanked it out,
14:50and I could feel it here, and my head is ripped out.
14:55But I was feeling this burning sensation in my heart,
14:58and I was, like, really wanting for Him to hear me.
15:02Janelle wondered if she would get out alive,
15:05and she turned to God in desperation.
15:07I was asking Him for a miracle.
15:10You know, I was there, and I was just giving my all to Him,
15:14and I was saying, you know, God, you can do miracles.
15:17I heard that you'd done it before.
15:19You know, why can't you show me a miracle today?
15:21Show me a sign. Show me that you hear me.
15:24You know, I'm calling all out to you, and, you know, just answer me.
15:28Sometimes we underestimate the power of prayer.
15:34Give me meaning in my life.
15:37On this particular morning, there were hundreds of prayers heard and answered,
15:42and hundreds of prayers since then.
15:45Janelle was caught in the middle of the crashing towers
15:48and prayed for God to help her.
15:50The next day, she was the only one found alive.
15:53When they rescued her, she was found standing up,
15:56asleep.
16:01Janelle didn't know who was with her, but his presence was calming.
16:06I felt the person said, Janelle, I got you.
16:10My name is Paul.
16:12And I had a smile on my face, and I just said, thank God.
16:16And I kind of drifted out of sleep, and then I wake up, you know, very fast,
16:20and I tried to look at the person to see his face,
16:23because he was still holding my hand, and he said, you're all right.
16:26They're going to get you out of here.
16:28Hold on. I'm going to hold your hand through it all until the guys get here.
16:32After being buried for 27 hours,
16:35Janelle Guzman was conscious when she was pulled from the rubble.
16:38She was the last survivor rescued, taken to the hospital.
16:41Her first request was to meet and to thank Paul.
16:45So which one of you held my hand?
16:48They didn't hold my hand.
16:50No one was holding my hand, talking with me.
16:53They said no, no one on the team was named Paul that day.
16:58Even the firemen that rescued Janelle said there was no Paul on their team.
17:04Convinced that she saw an angel, Janelle knew she had to change her life.
17:09And when I saw Roger, and he came to my bedside, I said, honey, we have to change.
17:14We have to get control of our life and be right with God.
17:18I can't go back to live with you, you know, not being married.
17:23Roger agreed, knowing in his heart that only God could have saved Janelle's life.
17:28He was more than willing to live differently, and they were married in June of 2002.
17:34Now instead of looking forward to weekends of wild partying,
17:37their first priority is their relationship with God.
17:41I really believe that there's no way anything or anybody
17:45is going to come between my family, as far as Janelle, my wife, and I are concerned,
17:50because of that center foundation that we have that is so strong, which is God.
17:56Today Janelle is able to walk along the streets of Ground Zero
17:59and realize she doesn't need a tragedy to motivate her to pray.
18:03Instead, she relies on daily prayer to help her in all areas of her life.
18:08I know prayer is the answer to all things.
18:11When we think it's impossible for things to happen, prayer beats it all.
18:19Janelle Guzman-McMillan believes it was prayer that kept her alive
18:22through the worst terrorist attack the U.S. has ever seen,
18:25and she knows now that God hears and answers our prayers.
18:33She is lucky to be alive. She is one of the survivors of the Twin Towers.
18:39What were you doing in the Twin Towers on September 11th?
18:42Well, it was my first time actually there.
18:44I was visiting one of my really good friends from college,
18:47and she had just gotten a job as a trader at Canner Fitzgerald,
18:52and we had breakfast at Wild Blue, you know, attached to windows of the world,
18:57and really moments before I had said my goodbyes to Stacy
19:03and headed down the elevator, and the elevator just started shaking a lot.
19:09There was really, the sound was unbearable,
19:12and I didn't really have any concept of what was happening.
19:17It just happened so fast,
19:19I really didn't get a chance to analyze it too much at that moment, but...
19:24When did you first realize there was an airplane that had crashed into the building?
19:28Not until after, later after I was revived.
19:32There was a lot of debris, and it kind of scratched and clawed my way out.
19:37It was covered in soot, and there was a man in the elevator with me,
19:47and he didn't make it out.
19:55I don't understand. I'm only going to be gone for the day, and what's bothering you?
20:01I just really don't have a good feeling about this trip.
20:05Besides, you promised me that you'd never travel without me again.
20:08I know I promised, but I can't help it.
20:10They have an emergency meeting, and I've got to be there, so I can't help that.
20:15But hey, I feel great. I've never felt better.
20:18And the heart, I haven't had any problems with it for a long time,
20:21and if I need it, I've got medicine I can take with me, which I am.
20:25And I've got the little, you know, the little phone.
20:30The little phone?
20:31Can you hear me? Yes.
20:33So it's important that you know that I'm there, and I will always be with you.
20:38All right. Well, you promised me a really big wedding.
20:40I promise you a big wedding.
20:42Will you get a tux while you're in New York?
20:44And I promise I'll get a tux.
20:46Oh, good.
20:47So...
20:50Come here.
20:57That should keep you safe.
20:59You know, I love you very much.
21:02You're my whole world. I don't know what I'd do without you.
21:06You just wouldn't.
21:07No.
21:11Go, you've got a plane to catch.
21:13All right, you... I'll call you.
21:15Bye-bye.
21:17Bye, baby.
21:25I see a light!
21:30I see a light!
21:42With the help of some paramedics and real heroes, as far as it goes,
21:50I remember kind of looking down, and the paramedics were trying to resuscitate me,
21:56and I could see myself.
21:58And I'm thinking, why are they working so hard?
22:00I feel fine, you know.
22:02I was watching it all happening, and I didn't feel any physical pain at that time,
22:09although I know I was in pain as I was trying to get out, but I was just praying.
22:12I was a silent observer, and I remember hearing them pronouncing me dead.
22:17You know, she's gone.
22:19I didn't feel much of anything other than just kind of peace,
22:23and as I kind of felt my, I guess, more ethereal or my spirit going and watching this all happen,
22:30and them working so hard, and me not being in pain,
22:34and then I felt a lot of light and love around me.
22:42Also, you know, my grandparents who had passed when I was young,
22:46I saw them, and it was almost like I was coming home.
22:52And there was an angel, and I felt very small next to him.
22:56You know, it seemed I had no sense of time or real space.
23:00It was really strange and beautiful.
23:05You know, it was a real feeling of peace and universal love.
23:11It was just warm.
23:14I remember saying, Lord, I'm here.
23:18If you want me, take me.
23:20And it seemed as if no sooner than that he was sending me back and leading me into service.
23:31And I was surrounded by spirits of those that I love, and I felt so safe.
23:38And when I came back into my body, it was, how can I say, it was like I was plunged into a pool of ice.
23:51Oh, my God. She's back. It's a miracle.
23:56She's back.
23:58For moments, no where I was or really how I got there,
24:02and it was, I didn't necessarily want to be back at that moment.
24:07I feel really blessed and fortunate,
24:12and I think that, you know, I'm just trying to share that with others and see how I can help.
24:22I know that it wasn't my time, and I know that now.
24:29I'm not afraid of death at all anymore.
24:32You know, thinking about it before and seeing others that have gone before me,
24:35but now I have a sense of peace in knowing, you know,
24:38or at least getting a glimpse of the feeling of, you know, what they're experiencing.
24:44But there's so much to do here.
24:47So many, so many women lost their husbands, and so many children lost their parents.
24:53And, well, that's, you know, everybody needs some comfort.
25:00The people who survived, we have a lot to be thankful for,
25:07and I hope that, you know, we're, you know, I feel good about being able to help those that did survive
25:14because there's so much, there's so much grief, and, you know,
25:17but there were so many miracles that happened that day, too.
25:21Amber, the young businesswoman who was trapped in the elevator when power went out of the tower.
25:30Somehow, she escaped the elevator only to find herself on a terrifying long journey to safety.
25:43I see a light.
26:00I see a light.
26:15I see a light.
26:31I see a light.
26:34I see a light.
26:39I see a light.
26:44I see a light.
26:48When she was taken to the ambulance, she died.
26:52She left her body and found herself in heaven.
27:00He's there to love you. He's there to love you.
27:10God told her to go back to earth to help those still in need.
27:14She was guided by a beautiful, angelic being.
27:27Oh, my God. She's back!
27:30It's a miracle! She's back!
27:48We have assembled in this room the leaders of the armed forces.
27:53All of the armed forces.
27:55And before us, we see four beautiful windows.
28:00Developed and designed by a gifted artist from Fredericksburg, Texas.
28:09Windows that symbolize what our country is all about.
28:13Countrymen who had read the Psalms as they gathered together in their houses of worship from the Thirteen Colonies.
28:21Embraced on these windows are the words that every uniformed member and every Department of Defense civilian says as an oath of office.
28:33I will support and defend.
28:37How can I support and defend the Constitution of the United States?
28:44By the help of God.
28:47It's fitting that this flag will serve as a powerful reminder of the bond between freedom and those who are willing to fight for freedom.
28:59We shall not forget the sacrifices of those Americans who died in the service of their country.
29:06Whether it was here in this very place, or in New York City, or in Afghanistan, or in Iraq.
29:13Or all the other sacrifices that people have made in the name of freedom of this nation.
29:21Mr. Speaker, we thank you for the gift of this very special flag.
29:26We thank the gifted designer, and I might add most generous donor of these magnificent windows.
29:35Mr. Dennis Roberts for helping to create a place of beauty and a place of peace.
29:41Thank you very much, and may God bless all of you. Thank you.
29:47Psalm 147 verses 1 through 6.
29:51Praise the Lord. How good it is to sing praises to our God.
29:56How pleasant and fitting to praise Him.
30:00The Lord builds up Jerusalem, gathers the exiles of Israel.
30:04He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
30:07He determines the number of the stars and calls each of them by name.
30:12Great is our Lord and mighty in power. His understanding has no limit.
30:16The Lord sustains the humble, but casts wicked to the ground.
30:22And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
30:27No longer will there be any curse.
30:29The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and His servants will serve Him.
30:33They will see His face and His name will be on their foreheads.
30:37There will be no more nights.
30:44Day of Miracles is not only about those who miraculously survived this horrific event, but why?
30:56Because this morning will be remembered by millions to the entire United States.
31:00As one of the disasters of all time.
31:13Okay, ladies and gentlemen, turn the page over one more page.
31:17Then look at item number three, and then we'll continue to compare with the chart.
31:23Turn it over, and we'll start with item number one.
31:26Excuse me, Carl.
31:31Ahem.
31:42Item number three.
31:48What?
31:53Captain, assemble the Joint Chiefs.
31:54Ladies and gentlemen, an aircraft has just crashed into the World Trade Center.
31:58For the monitor.
32:03We might be under attack.
32:05Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute.
32:08We don't know that yet.
32:10God help us.
32:12God help us.
32:18Oh my God! Oh my God! A plane just crashed into the towers!
32:22What?
32:24What should I do?
32:26All right, look, calm down. Get the sec def on the line, do you understand?
32:28Go, go.
32:54Oh my God!
33:24The heroes at the Pentagon were members of the military, emergency civilians, and others at the scene,
33:46were members of the military, emergency civilians,
33:50and others at the scene, including Defense Minister Donald Rumsfeld.
33:55They all reacted so rapidly that many were saved
33:59who might otherwise have died.
34:02One of the burned victims has miraculously recovered
34:06after enduring over 30 surgeries.
34:09The Pentagon is the personified symbol of the nation's commitment
34:13and determination to defend the highest principles
34:17of the United States Constitution.
34:20This we take for granted each and every day
34:23And in the evening when you close your eyes
34:26Knowing your family's safe
34:29Say an extra little prayer
34:31Cause freedom rings
34:33Let freedom ring
34:35Let freedom ring
34:37Let freedom ring
34:39To every breath I have within me
34:42Let freedom ring
34:44Let freedom ring
34:46Let freedom ring
34:48To every corner of the world
34:51Let freedom ring
34:53Let freedom ring
34:55Let freedom ring
34:57To every corner of the world
35:00Let freedom ring
35:02To every corner of the world
35:05Let freedom ring
35:07Let freedom ring
35:09Let freedom ring
35:18Let freedom ring
35:35Today we've had a national tragedy.
35:38Two airplanes have crashed into the World Trade Center.
35:43There was smoke everywhere and people are jumping out the windows.
35:46There has just been a huge explosion, a cascade of sparks and fire.
35:58There was nobody left alive after that first day.
36:00It was pretty unbelievable.
36:04We really did expect to find some people alive.
36:07You know, it was just chance that I was at that spot, and we happened to really find
36:14him there.
36:15You know, I came down from the precinct as soon as we heard, and it was just a mess.
36:22And like I said, I almost didn't think we'd find anybody alive.
36:26I could never express the feeling of that day.
36:31It's just being down there, and I was going in and out of consciousness, and I would hear
36:38voices and then I wouldn't hear anything, and it's just amazing.
36:44Then, all of a sudden, I heard Red's voice, and he's talking to me, and I thought I was
36:52gone.
36:53I really thought I was gone when I heard his voice.
36:57For some reason, I knew he was going to be the one that was going to get me out.
37:01To me, at least, it was a relief to know there was someone alive down there, but, you know,
37:08you feel so helpless.
37:09I mean, this is your job is to go out and, you know, try and protect people, but, you
37:13know, against this kind of destruction, there's nothing you can do.
37:18No way you can go through this and not have a tremendous amount of love and respect.
37:25I really didn't think I was going to be able to get him out, so, you know, thinking back
37:29about it now, it's pretty amazing.
37:36I mean, the hole that I was talking to and through was only, you know, maybe eight or
37:41ten inches to begin with, and we really had to bust it open quite a bit.
37:45I had no idea.
37:46I just, I kept talking to him and trying to encourage him.
37:50Here we are a week later, and I was, you know, it was jagged sharp all the way through the
38:01rubble field.
38:02There was, you know, bits of steel, and, you know, you really, you couldn't make your way
38:07one way or the other, and I saw one area that looked like a little bit of a pyramid
38:15of a shape, and I thought, you know, it looked like there might be something there, and I
38:19got closer, and I realized that there was an air pocket.
38:22There was a hole, you know, again, maybe eight or ten inches, and I called down there.
38:28As soon as I found it, I thought, there's got to be someone down there, and, you know,
38:34and Sonny called back, and I said, you know, who are you?
38:36I said, you know, what's your name?
38:38I was just trying to, you know, find out who it was, and he said he was a cop, and I was
38:44like, boy, that, that just really made me feel good.
39:07Within that first, within that first few hours, we were, it was hectic there, and there was
39:15really no resources at the time, but I did see one fireman probably a hundred yards away,
39:21and he had a, he had a sledgehammer, and I asked him if he could come over.
39:26I said I thought I had someone trapped, and we weren't really finding that many people,
39:30so we came over with the sledgehammer, and we started busting open this hole from about
39:34eight to ten inches, and we got it up to about maybe fifteen inches, maybe seventeen
39:39inches, and that was enough to start making an effort to get him out.
39:59Before we did, we asked if he was okay, was he, you know, did he have any broken bones
40:02or anything, and apparently his legs were hurting.
40:05Very much.
40:06So, you know, it was just, I didn't know if we were even going to be able to get him out.
40:10I didn't know if he was, if he was, you know, trapped or anything, because he kept saying
40:15he couldn't feel his legs too well.
40:18I didn't know if it was, you know, was he just losing his circulation, or were his legs crushed?
40:23I can't understand why that out of all this death and destruction, I was able to come
40:36out, that I can't, I can't understand why I lived and so many other people didn't.
40:45The only thing I can say is for some reason, I think the Lord has something He wants me
40:51to do.
40:53And I'm on a quest to find out what that is.
40:56I want to know.
41:10The two police officers were trapped in a pyramid-like cave that had very little air.
41:17One of them had his legs crushed underneath a huge piece of cement.
41:23I'm going to get out of here!
41:25Alright.
41:49Because of the lack of air, they both experienced surreal feelings.
41:53One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:24One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:28One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:30One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:32One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:34One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:36One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:38One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:40One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:42One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:44One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:46One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:48One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:50One police officer had a vision of Christ bringing him water.
42:53I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.
43:02Then there was the newlywed.
43:04Sujo John of Teaneck, New Jersey started his new position in April 2001 with high expectations.
43:12He had an excellent sales job with a firm in the World Trade Center.
43:16I work at the World Trade Center on the 81st floor of World Trade 1.
43:22I just barely got on my seat when this loud explosion goes off.
43:30One part of our office caught on flames and there were small flames all through.
43:34There were shrieks and a manager asked us to calm down and said we should all head to the stairwell.
43:42We thought that the worst was over and everyone was saying stay calm.
43:46From every floor people were rushing into the stairwell and I began the descent with a very heavy heart.
43:51Very heavy because my wife works in World Trade 2.
43:56Sujo made frantic cell phone calls to his wife without success.
44:01About the 40th floor that's when I saw all these firemen and cops coming up.
44:05There were hundreds of them climbing up and we all said God be with you, our prayers are with you.
44:10At some point during Sujo's 40 minute descent from the 81st floor another explosion rocked the building.
44:17Sujo had no idea a second plane had just flown into World Trade Center number 2.
44:25Because Mary's subway train arrived just moments after the second jet had crashed into the World Trade Center number 2
44:32she was never allowed to enter the building.
44:34She spent all of that morning calling out to God to protect her husband Sujo.
44:39When Sujo and thousands of others finally reached the lowest level of Tower 1
44:44rescue workers directed them across the mall that connects the two buildings
44:49and pointed them to the exit at World Trade Center number 2.
44:53I had a few people in front of me and around me and there were thousands behind me or hundreds I'm not sure.
44:58That's when the whole World Trade 2 collapses.
45:01I'm sure the Holy Spirit led me to the wall of World Trade 2, the wall on the lower level.
45:08And we were huddled, men and women, I think there were 12, 13 of us, we were huddled together.
45:13We fell on the ground, we were huddled in a group.
45:15I had no faint of hope that I was going to live.
45:19So I knew that if I was going to die I'm going to heaven.
45:22But like I wanted the others to make it to heaven so I said only Jesus can save, start saying Jesus.
45:28Start, start, you know, start taking the name of Jesus, all of them.
45:32I told them, each one of them, start taking the name of Jesus, start taking the name of Jesus.
45:35It's only the name of Jesus that can save us.
45:38And by saving us I didn't mean, you know, we're going to get out of that situation.
45:42And then eternity, heaven or hell, we just faced everyone there.
45:46And I could hear them cry Jesus behind me, you know, repeating those, repeating the name of Jesus.
45:51You know, I could hear that for at least 3, 4 minutes.
45:54Surrounded in darkness, he thought he had been buried alive as he pulled himself up out of 2 feet of gritty dust.
46:01Choking on the ash and flying debris, Sujo was walking blind.
46:16It's not your time yet. Don't give up.
46:24So I picked him up and said, I said, do you know Jesus? Do you know Jesus?
46:34He said, yes, Jesus, Jesus. I said, start saying Jesus.
46:37A flashing red light from a crushed ambulance directed the two men to safety.
46:42They walked out of the debris field together, saying the name of Jesus through the darkness.
46:48They found one other man alive as they stumbled out of that cloud of death.
46:58Use your phone.
46:59Sir, this phone isn't working.
47:00My wife, she's on the 71st floor. It's not possible she's going to make it.
47:04Well, let's try your phone.
47:08I think I've got something here.
47:12Oh my God. Is that you, honey?
47:14I've been trying you all day.
47:16I've called so many times. I couldn't get through.
47:20I'm so glad that you're alive.
47:23You know, I tried to go in to search for you, but this kind woman pulled me out and said I needed to think about the baby.
47:33Hours later, his cell phone rang and he ran as fast as he could to the New Jersey ferry.
47:39I saw my wife. I saw my wife next to Jacob Javits and I was standing there just waiting for me.
47:46And we couldn't believe it because both of us had given hope that we would ever see each other.
47:51I had absolutely no hope that I would be alive in the first place.
47:54The second place that I would ever see my wife. Same with her.
47:57And then we see each other. We hug each other as if like this is not real.
48:03This story is not just about those who died, but also about those whose lives will be changed forever.
48:11It's given me a wonderful opportunity to share my faith and the faith that Tom had.
48:19And I think if anything positive and wonderful can come from a tragic and horrid situation,
48:27then it is the fact that we can, in the midst of a tragedy, find God and the strength that He can give us.
48:37And know that if we trust in Him, then we'll be just fine.
48:44I know prayer is the answer to all things.
48:47When we think it's impossible for things to happen, prayer beats it all.
48:53If you know Jesus, that's all the name you need to take. That name is so powerful.
48:57It's more powerful. It's like I can't compare it to any other name.
49:01It's like if the enemy thought that the bomb was powerful or that plane was powerful,
49:05oh my God, just this name Jesus, that's more powerful than any scheme of the evil one.
49:10At this hour, Sujo and Mary are so grateful to the Lord for life, for their love,
49:17for the simple joy of having each other and a baby on the way.
49:22But in their joy is a deep sense of loss.
49:25I'm happy in a way that my wife and I are alive and, you know,
49:28and my families and our families are not going through what thousands upon thousands of families are going through in this country.
49:35But the only thing that keeps coming to mind day in, day out, like the last two days,
49:39has been like those innocent firemen, those policemen, all the volunteers.
49:45They had no reason to be in that building.
49:47They just came up through the doors of those buildings just to save people like us.
49:52And today, they are not in their homes. Their loved ones have no clue where they are.
49:57They're frantically running all over the hospitals in Manhattan, you know, trying to reach,
50:03trying to reach, you know, trying to see the face of their loved one.
50:06And some of them are never even going to get their bodies.
50:09That thought just breaks my heart.
50:12As we look over the landscape of Lower Manhattan,
50:14we're torn between the incredible stories of God's deliverance
50:18and the tragic stories of unimaginable grief.
50:22The Word of God tells us to rejoice with those who are rejoicing
50:26and weep with those who are weeping.
50:29This is an hour when we will certainly do both.
50:33What is also certain but unseen is the rejoicing voices in heaven
50:39of those 12 people who huddled with Sujo John
50:43as the World Trade Center Tower No. 2 collapsed.
50:47Their names are unknown to us, but not to Jesus the Christ.
50:52With their last breath, they called upon His name,
50:57the only name under heaven that has the power over eternity.
51:02Over 90% of the Tabernacle Choir were miraculously absent from their offices
51:07in the World Trade Center on 9-11.
51:10Come, Jehovah
51:17God Almighty
51:24Listen to me
51:28If you believe, you'll always have tomorrow
51:36If you believe, dreams can all come true
51:43Deep in your heart you know
51:47It's faith that you must show
51:50If you believe, there's nothing you can't do
51:58And in this world of ours, the hero will be you
52:06All my life
52:13I've always known
52:20The man upstairs is watching over us
52:27And it's faith that he wants you to show
52:34If you believe, you'll always have tomorrow
52:41If you believe, dreams can all come true
52:48Deep in your heart you know
52:53It's faith that you must show
52:56If you believe, there's nothing you can't do
53:03And in this world of ours, the hero will be you
53:16The hero will be you
53:24You're my glory
53:32And the lifter of my head
53:43You're my glory, Lord
53:50And the lifter of my head
54:01For Thou, O Lord, art still for me
54:14My glory
54:19And the lifter of my head
54:30You're my glory
54:35And the lifter of my head
54:44You're my glory
