S. Korea launches int'l support group in WHO to fight epidemics

South Korea has launched its second of three global support groups to spur multilateral cooperation on global pandemics.
Dubbed the 'Support Group for Global Infectious Disease Response,' the group aims to share COVID-19 experience and discuss ways for effective health governance.

Another UN group was launched under South Korea's lead to pool international efforts and tackle global infectious diseases.
To mark the launch of the 'Support Group for Global Infectious Disease Response', 80 medical experts and international health representatives, as well as World Health Organization Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha, met for their first meeting online on Wednesday.
"It is clear that no country will be fully safe until all countries are safely protected from the virus. And this will not happen without all of us working together to beat COVID-19 and be better prepared for the next round and this calls for a more resilient and well-prepared global health governance. Korea is very is very willing and ready to contribute to the collective efforts and to that end, we have proposed this Support Group for Global Infectious Disease Response."
The group will be run by 8 core-members South Korea, Singapore, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, Kenya, Mexico and Peru with South Korea as the chair.
It aims to hold action-oriented discussions for effective global health governance.
The participants gave a positive evaluation of Seoul's leadership and agreed that international cooperation is crucial to be better prepared for another pandemic that may arise in the future.
