The COVID-19 pandemic has battered South Korea's job market,... with nearly 2-point-4 million people dropping plans to find work as of last month.
As a result, in the coming days,... the South Korean government is scheduled to lay out a package of measures to try and revitalize the sluggish job market and get people back to work.
Kim Hyo-sun reports.
This comes as the number of people in their 20s who gave up on looking for a job increased by nearly 36 percent on-year to stand at 412-thousand as of March.
The total number of people in South Korea who packed up their job search also reached a record high of 2.4 million last month.
The number of those who have been laid off temporarily also hit a record high last month,... surpassing 1-point-6 million.
That's a whopping 364 percent increase from the same period last year,... and a record since related data was first compiled in July 1983.
"There are people being laid off temporarily in the dining, education services, retail and wholesale industries."
The government is also mulling to expand the number of subsidies for the maintenance of employment as many employees, even at major conglomerates, including Korean Air, have been laid off or put on long-term unpaid leave.
