Jerusalem — An Israel-based designer has invented 3D printed synthetic fruits that are edible and contain essential minerals and vitamins.

According to Dezeen, Meydan Levy created five types of artificial "neo fruits."

The neo fruits' structure is made of cellulose, an organic compound that forms the structure of living plants.

The artificial fruits' cellulose microtubes also contain the liquid mixture that gives the fruit nutrients and flavor.

Citing Levy, the online outlet says the artificial fruits do not take up their final shape until liquid is injected.

Levy says that without the liquids, the artificial fruits could be stored for long periods and transported easily until the injections are added before consumption.

According to Levy, industrial agriculture will not be able to meet the nutritional needs that coincide with a global population increase.

Dezeen reports that nutritionists helped Levy to create different ingredients for each type of neo fruit in order to meet the wide range of nutrition the human body requires.
