Animal lover Peter Veliky lowered himself over the side of a bridge in the Russian city of St Petersburg to retrieve a stray cat that had been stuck for two days
A hero animal lover has scaled a bridge to rescue a trapped cat.
Amateur video shows big-hearted Peter Veliky risking life and limb to retrieve the terrified moggy that had managed to get itself stuck on a bridge over the Griboyedov Canal in the Russian city of St Petersburg.
Because the little creature had wedged itself into a small nook behind some sandbags the idea of rescue attempt was written off until Peter died a robe to the bridge’s railings and carefully lowered himself over the side.
On reaching the pussy’s hidey-hole he measured the frightened animal with a gentle pat before grabbing it by the scruff of the neck and hauling it to safety.
The successful rescue was captured on camera by his wife, who can later be seen on the clip comforting the traumatised moggy.
The rescued cat is said to be doing well and will soon go up for adoption.
Back in May this year, a similar cat rescue was abandoned after the capricious creature got bored with being stuck on a bridge and just wandered home of its own accord.
The cat, named Hatty, was owned by Plymouth resident Kirsty Howden. She said at the time that she was in the middle of a conversation about suspending train operations for an hour to allow for her cat to be rescued when she heard a sound outside her window: "I was sat responding to comments, heard a meow outside, had a look through the window and there she was!
"She is a bit skinny and smelly, very vocal and has now headed upstairs and put herself to bed.”
Kirsty added that Hatty seemed very pleased to see her two dogs, and there were "kisses all round”.
