The Global Destination Sustainability Index
has named Gothenburg, Sweden, the reigning
champ of sustainability since 2016. Here’s a look at the world's
most sustainable city. Gothenburg consists of
2,950 square feet of
green space per citizen. Landvetter Airport has held the highest level of Airport Carbon Accreditation since 2011, meaning it is carbon neutral. 65% of its easily accessible
public transportation runs
on renewable energy. 92% of lodging in Gothenburg
is eco-certified by regional
sustainability organizations. The city is home to Liseberg,
a theme park with rides that run
entirely on renewable wind energy. The high-tech research hub's
population is expected to grow
by a third over the next 15 years.
