Plot synopsis: Winner of numerous Japanese Academy Awards, Yojiro Takita's period masterpiece recounts the life of samurai Kanichiro Yoshimura -- a controversial character -- and the waning days of feudal Japan. Widely recruited for his swordsmanship, Yoshimura's loyalty to both the shogunate and the emperor causes outer conflict and inner turmoil.
