Meet Colombia's lesbian hero: Marta Álvarez

After nine years in prison and a series of homophobic attacks, Marta Álvarez fought and won. PinkNews sat down with #Colombia's proud #lesbian activist.

Marta Álvarez spent nine years in a Colombian prison, for the murder of her brother, and experienced a series of relentless homophobic attacks at the hands of the guards and officials.

The former inmate spent years of her sentence trying to speak out about the inequality and eventually took her case to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), where she argued she was being discriminated against for not receiving same-sex conjugal visits.

Little over two decades after her case was first submitted to the commission, Álvarez became the first #LGBT person to be given a public apology by the Colombian government.

One agreement was that a party should be held in one of Álvarez’s former prisons, where she would be given the public apology in front of other LGBT inmates. PinkNews went inside the prison party—watch to see what happened.
