It Would Take 2.8 Million Years
to Earn as Much as Jeff Bezos Quartz News recently calculated what
it would take for the average worker to
reach Jeff Bezos’s $130 billion fortune. According to a 2018 survey
by the U.S. Bureau of Labor, the
average full-time worker in the
United States makes $46,800. Assuming that person spends no money
on rent, bills or taxes, it would take more
than 21,000 years to save $1 billion. That’s the same amount of time it’s taken for civilization
to evolve from cave-dwelling inhabitants to current day. To reach $130 billion, it would take almost
2.8 million years of work, which is 10 times
longer than the existence of homo sapiens. The comparison is even bleaker for those
who work for Bezos’s company, Amazon. The lowest paid, full-time worker at
Amazon makes about $31,200 annually. That means they would need to work for
4.15 billion years to earn as much as Bezos.
