School 'Lunch Shaming'
Is Outlawed by CA Law The new legislation requires
that all students receive a standard
school lunch regardless of unpaid meal fees. Students with lunch debt are
often given "alternative lunches,"
which in turn can lead to "lunch
shaming" by other students. Authored by state Sen. Robert Hertzberg,
the legislation was signed by
CA Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday. Newsom said he was inspired
to support the bill by a nine-year-old
boy who used $74.80 in allowance
to pay off his third grade's lunch debt. Gavin Newsom, CA Governor, via CNN "Lunch shaming" has also
been perpetuated by school
administration officials. A Pennsylvania school district
issued a letter to parents threatening
foster care for students with unpaid lunch debt. According to the School
Nutrition Association, 75% of school
districts reported unpaid lunch debt
for the 2016-2017 school year.
