'Age-Positivity' Could
Be the Key to a Long Life We've all heard the phrase
"respect your elders." Now science has proven that respecting your elders can help
them live longer. According to research from Orb Media, countries that emphasize respect for seniors boasted lower rates of poverty and ill health among older populations. An estimated 2.1 billion people will live past age 60 by 2050. Negative stereotypes toward
aging can decrease lifespans
and quality of life. People with a positive attitude toward aging live
7.5 years longer than those who dread it. Negativity toward old people is most common in industrialized, high-income nations. Japan, South Korea and Argentina rank the lowest in this regard. A positive attitude toward aging has been shown
to help the elderly stay socially active and seek out
new opportunities.
