3 STDs Reach
All-Time Highs in US.
The finding was revealed in
the Sexually Transmitted Disease
Surveillance Report, issued by
the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
The CDC found that combined
cases of chlamydia, syphilis
and gonorrhea have increased.
Combined they total 2.4 million infections that were diagnosed and reported just in last
year alone, Elizabeth Torrone, CDC, via CNN.
The total represents
"the most cases" recorded.
Numbers of reported cases
have risen for five straight years.
A decline in condom
use and a surge in
testing are possible
components in the rise.
Referring to the
increase as an "STD epidemic,"
CDC officials cite infertility and
infant fatality as repercussions of STDs.
STDs cause a significant burden to the health care system, both in terms of direct medical costs for treating STDs as well as the personal cost for people who have an STD, Elizabeth Torrone, CDC, via CNN.
The CDC report urges agencies
on the local, state and federal levels
to get strategic in preventing STDs
and improving overall sexual health
