“I’ve only been good at two things in my life,” says Chef Plum, “and that’s cooking food and talking”. So, what is a Chef to do who has so much love in his heart and wants to share it? In this episode of Random Acts of Cooking, Chef Plum visits St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey where he is connecting with a group of boys in the Culinary Program to guide them through the preparation of a celebratory meal in honor of their school teachers and mentors.

St. Benedict’s Prep’s mission is devoted to educating young men from in and around Newark to fulfill their potential as emotionally mature, morally responsible and well-educated citizens. Operated by the Benedictine monks of Newark Abbey since 1868, St. Benedict’s offers a rigorous curriculum that sharpens the mind, shapes the character and nourishes the spirit. The underprivileged kids from this community are clearly benefiting … their graduation rate is almost 100%!

Seven special senior boys from the school’s cooking program are getting the opportunity of a lifetime by using the skills they have learned this year to cook a masterpiece meal with Chef Plum and his team. Together, they will honor and say thank you by preparing a meal for their teacher Michelle Tuorto, Headmaster “Father Ed” Leahy, and their special guests who have been their mentors over the years.

“Everything that happens in this school is positive,” Chef Plum explains. “It’s all about reinforcing the positive energy of these boys that may not have had the chance to have somebody reinforce that in their life. Random Acts of Cooking is all about doing the same thing… it’s about using food to help people and taking what I’m good at doing and using it to do some good across the world.”

Gathering all the ingredients for the meal is job 1 and Chef Plum and his team first visit The Pantry, a specialty market in Fairfield Connecticut. They have generously offered to donate all the food that the students are going to cook so the team roams the aisles picking up lamb, vegetables and other ingredients before they head out to St Benedict’s.

At the school, you will meet the students who will be coached by Chef Plum and learn a little bit about how they feel about St. Benedict’s and cooking a meal for the people who have supported and encouraged them. It’s a labor of love and they are excited for the challenge of creating something really special.
