A singed baby monkey was recovering after being electrocuted on power lines then abandoned by his mother.

The infant was running along the 20ft high power lines with his mother in Chonburi, Thailand on October 2.

But locals said there was a sudden spark and loud bang believed to be from a short circuit which caused the mother and son to fall to the ground.

The mother scampered away and residents found the injured baby monkey in pain and struggling to regain his composure.

Residents put the burned monkey into a cage and handed him over to the local animal welfare group called Watchdog Thailand.

Footage from the same day shows the injured baby monkey recovering by snacking on pieces of fruit to regain his strength. The primate's skin was burnt and he had also partially lost his sight after the incident.

District governor Pakkathorn Tianchai promised to ensure that the baby monkey, nicknamed Jor, is nursed back to health.

He said: "I will stay in contact with the veterinarian to make sure the baby monkey is fully healed before we release him back to the wild.

''I hope that the monkey will regain his sight but if not we will have to consider other options as it could be a problem for him in the wild.''
