북-미 핵회담 결렬에 대한 전문가의 견해
Let's get an expert's take on the breakdown of last weekend's North Korea-U.S. nuclear talks in Stockholm.
Many had hoped for a positive outcome, but it appears that was wishful thinking, especially that we have the benefit of hindsight now.
I'm joined on Skype by Dr. Mark P. Barry, an independent Asian affairs analyst who has followed North Korea-U.S. relations for nearly 30 years.
In your decades studying North Korea-U.S. relations, there's probably nothing that surprises you anymore. This is likely just a bump in the road, but were you surprised the North walked out and then proceeded to verbally blast the U.S. negotiators?
The U.S. has agreed to Sweden's proposal that the two sides come back in two weeks to have another go. North Korea has yet to commit to that. What would have to happen over the next fortnight to entice Pyeongyang back?
It seems like, despite the hiccup in Stockholm, both sides would welcome a third summit between their leaders. However, if the lower-level officials can't thrash out something concrete in the meantime, how do you rate the chances of President Trump and Kim Jong-un holding little more than another photo opp?
Are you concerned that an extended standoff between the North and the U.S. could see the situation slip back to the tensions we endured before the Singapore summit? Especially if the North Koreans think President Trump might be voted out next year or potentially be removed from office before then.
Ok, thanks for making time to speak with us on a Sunday evening over there on the East Coast. Hopefully we'll see things moving forward in a more positive direction soon. Dr. Mark P. Barry, thanks for joining us.
