For years opioids have been generously prescribed and gladly welcomed for their temporary relief for chronic or post-operative pain. But for too many, these drugs become addictive, creating a craving that no force of will can deny. Michael Taylor was one of those trapped and consumed by these drugs, but his family and friends are determined not to accept his loss quietly. In tandem with Shatterproof, a national organization dedicated to ending the devastation that the disease of addiction causes families, the Taylors host an annual event in Michael’s honor to celebrate recovery and support legislative change to help end the stigma of addiction.
Shatterproof works with doctors, employers, and political leaders to take on the stigma and damage from this disease. Gary Mendell established the organization in 2012 after the stigma of addiction took the life of his son, Brian, with the promise to spare others from this tragedy by creating a national organization that treats addiction like the chronic disease that it is. By fostering tolerance and compassion, Shatterproof strives to provide accessible resources for prevention, treatment, and recovery.
The “For Michael: Showdown on the Sound” event held at Weed Beach in Darien Connecticut, is an annual fundraiser that supports Shatterproof, and was created to honor Michael Taylor’s love of traveling, adventure, sports, and being out on the water. It also helps raise awareness in the community so that parents have the tools and support to prevent their children from developing an addiction to alcohol and other drugs, and ensures that those afflicted with this disease gain access to proven and effective treatment.
Michael was an all-state tennis player at Darien High School, who went on to play Division 1 varsity tennis for three years at Villanova University. During his junior year, Michael was prescribed opioid painkillers after reconstructive shoulder surgery due to a tennis injury, became addicted, and ultimately lost the battle.
See how Shatterproof, and events like the “Showdown on the Sound”, help families and communities heal their pain and become stronger than addiction.
