When it comes to participating in the work force, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are often pushed off into a slow lane of repetitive, dull jobs that underestimate their abilities and don’t address their needs for meaningful work. When Special Ed Teacher Tiffany Exeter moved to Denver, Colorado, she understood what the IDD community was looking for and tackled the challenge by opening two fun and cool special needs accessible businesses.

Tiffany’s first venture was Brewability Labs, a space that would be perfect for Denver residents to come and enjoy a pint in a welcoming and friendly setting. The environment is set up with photos and checklists to help its disabled and special needs employees to become fully functional. Tiffany makes sure to hold her employees to a high standard, as she knows this job isn’t charity, but a real way for the IDD community to acquire gainful employment and work experience.

“I found out that most of these amazing humans get placed in not very fulfilling employment,” Tiffany shared. “Respectability is good for everyone whether they are special needs or not. Everyone has things that make them feel successful.”

As Brewability Labs grew, Tiffany had a long waiting list of potential employees and she wanted to create more jobs. When she heard of a local pizza place closing its doors, and thinking that pizza goes really well with beer, Pizzability was born. She was excited to create a family friendly place that would give special needs children and adults an inclusive restaurant option that is accepting of people of all abilities. Not only is the food a hit, but the staff’s good humor and friendly manner brings customers back again and again. Brian Olson is one of Tiffany’s favorite team members who is both versatile and a bit of a comedian. “I do various things from making pizza to doing cashiering,” he says with a grin. “I literally make dough.”

Watch how Tiffany and her amazing staff are shaking up the Denver dining world with “a little slice of community” where her special needs employees learn and thrive and everyone is welcome.
