South Korea sent an official complaint to the International Olympic Committee over Japan allowing the use of its imperial flag at the Tokyo Olympics next year.
In a letter, Seoul expressed deep disappointment and concerns over the possible presence of the Rising Sun Flag at the global games.
The nation's sports ministry urged the IOC to ban the use of the flag, explaining it has the same connotations as the Nazi's Swastika.
Last month, Tokyo's Olympic organizing committee said there is no reason to ban the flag during the event, saying there is nothing inherently political about it.
