PNoy sees no need to ban fraternities

PNoy to frat elders: End violent traditions MANILA - President Benigno Aquino III finds no reason to declare a total ban on fraternities. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Aquino said the problem lies in violent initiation rites. He stressed there is already an existing law to address this. The President, however, admitted that there is a need to study the enforcement of the Anti-Hazing Law to prevent deaths or injuries during initiation rites. "I don't think there's a need for a full ban. That is not allowed. There is an Anti-Hazing Law already in the books. So one has to ask yung what is lacking in terms of enforcement that prevents us from exercising the full penalties embodied in that law," he said. "I'm not a member of a fraternity. But to inflict such harm on people you will call brothers, it really escapes any logic that I can fathom," Aquino said. The President appealed to senior members of fraternities to take action and end the violent tradition of their organizations. "I would like to call upon all the elders of these various fraternties: Even if you had to undergo the same, isn't it about time that you're the most active in making sure that it stops?" Aquino's statement comes in the wake of the death of Guillo Cesar Servando, an 18-year-old student from De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB). Last Saturday, Servando died of injuries allegedly sustained during initiation rites by the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity.
