A military spokesman confirmed Tuesday that Moro National Liberation Front rebels led by Nur Misuari are getting more hostages in 3 barangays in Zamboanga City. Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, Armed Forces public affairs chief, said security forces were able to contain the MNLF men to three coastal barangays in the city. "We and the [Philippine National Police] were able to contain them and prevented them from further entering Zamboanga City proper but unfortunately that area is densely populated. Population is approximately 160,000. We have yet to enter these areas because we don't want to endanger the public," he told ANC. Zagala said the MNLF rebels are holding 100 plus hostages in barangays Santa Catalina, Kasanyangan and Talon-Talon. He said security forces are staying in the fringes of these barangays to prevent the armed rebels from leaving the area. He also noted that residents can still leave the barangays despite the security cordon. "We encourage the residents to get out of the danger zone. The cordon and containment is only directed against the armed elements. As much as possible, residents who wish to get out we can process them to leave the area the soonest possible time," he said. The military spokesman confirmed that there were several skirmishes between security forces and the MNLF Tuesday morning. He said government forces are standing down while waiting for the local crisis committee to work out a peaceful resolution to the ongoing tensions. MORNINGS@ANC, September 10, 2013
