What is double cleansing? Double cleansing actually means using two different types of cleansers to properly remove impurities and thoroughly cleanse your skin. It's a simple-yet-effective process, especially when you have makeup on. First, apply an oil-based cleanser to your face to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and sweat. Then, use a foaming cleanser that will clear pores of residual oil and grime.
Why double cleanse? Simply put, oil and water don’t mix and you need both to draw out and remove both the oil (makeup, excess sebum, sunscreen) and water-based impurities on your face. The water-based foaming wash allows the surfactants (cleansing agents) to penetrate the layers of skin, since you have cleared away the oil barrier that would otherwise prevent this from happening. Water-based impurities, such as sweat and environmental pollutants, can then be properly removed.
