S. Korea honors Korean War veterans while marking 66th anniversary of armistice signing

Events were held in South Korea over the weekend to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armistice Agreement... and to honor the soldiers who fought for the South Korean side under the UN flag during the bloody three-year conflict.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.
South Korea honored a group of war veterans and their families on Saturday that fought in the Korean War under the United Nations flag.
Seoul awarded the Order of Military Merit to the late Charles Hercules Green, a senior officer in the Australian Army.
Green's family came to South Korea to participate in the event.

"I think it would feel like a loss for us, if there was not peace. You know, our family, like many other families, here in Korea and around the world, gave up something and sacrificed."

Another commemorative ceremony was held to mark the 66th anniversary of the signing of the Korean War armistice agreement... at the inter-Korean truce village of Panmunjeom.
During the event, General Robert Abrams, commander of the U.S. Forces Korea and UN Command,... said the U.S. and South Korean militaries will continue to support measures for dialogue, lasting peace and the final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea.

"History has been made here, where just a few short weeks ago, the President of the United States was able to step across into the military demarcation line into North Korea, an historic first. Here now, the guard posts are unarmed and surveillance feeds are shared."

Abrams said none of this would have been possible without the armistice or without those who sacrificed their lives,... and that bringing home the remains of American wardead is a solemn obligation.
He vowed to remain committed to the preservation of the armistice... while enabling actions that will one day pave the way to long-awaited peace.
