Did you ever know someone who seems to be on a brilliant, fast track career path and then suddenly gets up one day and decides to do something completely different? Sherif Farag is that guy. After a 15 year career in Management Consulting and Business Strategy, most recently with McKinsey in New York City, Sherif decided to trade in the airline miles and hotel points and do something completely out of his consulting comfort zone.
The spark that piqued his curiosity came from a colleague who had recently asked him what his dream job would be. “Without hesitation, I said I would love to own my own bakery,” he recalled.
Soon after, while on an extended European vacation with his wife Nadine, Sherif mentioned his dream and how he would be blissfully happy to get a place in the countryside where they could live the quiet life, bake bread, and drink wine. Nadine sensed this was more than a passing whim and suggested he take a one week baking course to see if his passion would still be strong after he learned about the craft and skills he would need to be a success.
One week later Sherif had his answer - he loved it and believed more than ever that he wanted to pursue his dream. With Nadine’s full support, Sherif resigned from his job and the two of them moved to Paris for 6 months while he attended an intensive training program followed by an internship at a local boulangerie (bakery). The couple then decided to move back to Sherif’s hometown, Durham, NH, and open their own bakery, Farag Breads.
Ironically, Nadine is the one in this relationship who is the risk taker. “Life is fluid, and that gives us permission to try different things at different times,” she explained. “Not everything will succeed, and that’s OK. You have to consistently push back against the idea that you have to be one thing, or that life has to be neat and packaged and tied up in a box.”
Watch how this couple voluntarily uproot their lives to follow a dream. Their simple message - trust in whatever you want to do and never underestimate what you are capable of when you are fully engaged… heart, mind, body and soul.
