Time now for our "Life & Info" segment... where we focus on information useful for your everyday life whether you are in Korea or somewhere else in the world.
We have our business correspondent Kim Hyesung in the studio today to discuss the ways to block out the sun.
Yes, it's summer, it's not only getting hotter, but the sun's rays, are getting stronger.
Direct exposure to sun's rays, ultriviolet radiation, can result in sunburn, brown spots in the short term...skin aging and skin cancer in the long-term.
So, correctly blocking out the sun is important.
The sun emits two types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that reach our skin.
Ultraviolet A (UVA), long-wave, and ultraviolet B (UVB), short-wave.
Both types damage unprotected skin.
SPF, sun protection factor is used to protect from UVB, which affects aging and cancer.
SPF indicates how long it will take for UVB rays to redden the skin when using a sunscreen.
For instance, someone using a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 will take 15 times longer to redden than without the sunscreen.
So the higher the number, the longer it lasts.
PA stands for protection factor that protects from UVA rays that affect pigmentation. There are mainly three types PA+, PA ++, PA+++ in Korea.
Take a listen to a dermatology expert.
"Research shows SPF of 50 or higher is effective. PA triple plus is good enough to protect from UVA. But what matters is how much you apply and how often you apply it. We recommend applying it every two hours. You actually need 2 milligrams per square centimeter of skin. But people usually use only a third of the necessary amount. Putting more on than you think is actually important."
I see. Hyesung, there are just so many products out there when you go to cosmetics store, liquid, mist, cream...is there a difference in how effective they are?
Right, according to research firm, Euro Monitor, the sunblock market has grown 20 percent in five years to around 800 million U.S. dollars in 2017.
The type of products available here in Korea have doubled in the last three years.
The effectiveness of products, be it sunstick, suncrem, which is measured by SPF and PA, are quite similar.
But given that people have to put a lot more than we usually do, experts say creme or liquid is better than mist, as the area mist can cover is smaller.
2. Very useful information. Along with skin, I think what's concerning is eye protection from the sun. Can you tell us some tips on what to look out for when buying a pair of sunglasses?
Yes, sunglasses, out of the two, UVA and UVB, our eyes, the corena can absorb UVA when it's strong, causing inflammation of the cornea or cataract.
There are three key things to look for.
Number one is check whether it can block UV of 400 nanometers, 400 is needed to protect your eyes from UVB UVA.
Second, is color of the sunglasses.
