People of Color
in US Face 66% More
Air Pollution, Says New Study The analysis was
conducted by the Union
of Concerned Scientists. It combined data from
the 2018 Census Bureau
with 2014 data from the
Environmental Protection Agency. It found that, on average,
African Americans are exposed to
61% more tiny pollution particles from burning gasoline than white residents, Asian Americans are
exposed to 73% more, and Latino Americans
are exposed to 75% more. This pattern is referred
to by activists as
"environmental racism." Researchers focused on
particulate matter pollution that
enters the bloodstream and
has been linked to disease.
