Unlike other top-class motorsport competitions like Formula One and IndyCar Series, NASCAR counts only three manufacturers. Ford, Chevrolet and Toyota make up the entire Manufacturers' Championship competition. Dodge quit the NASCAR scene in 2012, following the departure of other big American names such as Pontiac and Buick. However, the sport has consistently had few manufacturers producing multiple cars for multiple teams due to restrictions on foreign companies by the governing body between 1960 and 2004. Prior to 1960, the sport counted many famous European names, such as Jaguar, Renault and Volkswagen. Even though contemporary rules allow foreign makers to enter. Their investment would be mirrored by the production of simplified, stripped down models built only to resemble their real cars. Furthermore, the teams and corporate sponsors are the elements grabbing the most media attention.
