Nawal el Saghiera BANAT MAZIN ANA AL DACTEUR 1968 (I'm the Doctor
This clip is from the film Ana Al Dacteur (I'm the Doctor) This scene takes
place at a Mouled which is a village fair in Egypt. The people are
playing typical village fair games, including a bit of Tahtib sparring,
wrestling matches, competitions that involve the breaking of bunches of sugarcane over the knee to see who can break more of them and thus demonstrate who is the strongest, and a game called El Madfa3 (the canon) which is a small
cannon on wheels with a cap on the end that is pushed forcefully on a
track against a wall. The person who makes it hit the wall and makes
the cap explode wins a prize such as a doll or a sweet or other such
thing. The first dancer in this clip is baladi dancer Nawal El Saghera who
arrives on a camel. She dances in baladi style throughout the clip
several times with sagat. The Mazin sisters also dance throughout this
clip, and again towards the end of it. They are not listed in the
credits as the Banat Mazin but rather as "Rouba3i Luxor" which means
the quartet from Luxor. The first woman who sings is Sha'abi singer
Khadra Mohamed Khadr. Then at 1:49 a very young Fatme Serhan in a
flowered dress begins to sing. At 2:55 the singer who is waving a
branch is actor/singer 3omar El Geezawi. Khadra Mohamed Khadr sings
again at 4:01 while Fatme Serhan sits next to her and eats lettuce
leaves. And finally towards the end, sha'abi singer Shekawi el Keenawi
sings. The music and lyrics to this song were composed by Zakariya el
7aegawi. The producer of the film is Lebanese actress/producer Mary Queeny.
