‘When They See Us’ Revisits 'Central Park Jogger' Case
in a Powerful Way Ava DuVernay’s new Netflix miniseries,
‘When They See Us,’ provides more insight
into the “Central Park Jogger” case than
ever before. The infamous case, surrounding the sexual assault and beating of Trisha Meili in April 1989, led to the wrongful conviction of five teenage boys. Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Korey Wise, Yusef Salaam, and Antron McCray, also known as
The Central Park Five, were forced to live out their youth behind bars. Without any DNA evidence, the five men were sentenced to spend 6 to 13 years locked up. The miniseries highlights the blatant racism behind the ruling and the flaws in the American criminal justice system. The attack was later linked to serial rapist Matias Reyes and the convictions were dismissed, but the case continues to impact the men's lives today.
