At least 14 injured in Japan stabbing attack

KAWASAKI, JAPAN — A mass stabbing in the city of Kawasaki, Japan on Tuesday morning has left over a dozen school children wounded and one child dead, Japanese broadcaster NHK reports.

An elementary school girl and a man in his 30s were believed to have died in the attack, according to The Japan Times.

As many as 16 other school children were injured in the attack while waiting at a bus stop, NHK reports. According to Kyodo News, two other adults were also wounded.

The news agency cites police as saying that two of the school girls and a woman in her 40s suffered serious injuries because of the attack.

The suspect was a man in his 50s, police told Kyodo News. He was seen holding knives in both hands. Police say the suspect stabbed victims before stabbing himself in the neck. Officers later found two knives that were believed to be used during the attack.

The children were believed to be students at Cartitas Elementary School. However, according to The Japan Times, officials at the elementary school could not immediately confirm if the victims were their students.

They added that they are still gathering information.
