Taiwan has become a huge magnet for tourists in about as little time as its economy boomed in the late 20th century, yet these rapid developments have not taken away its air of mystery, its cultural heritage or its bewildering natural beauty. The remarkable advancement is epitomized on the streets of Taipei, whose principle skyscraper, the Taipei 101 was recently the world's tallest building. Shilin Night Market and Ximending are two districts that come alive at night with various shopping and entertainment outlets as well as flavourful street food. Sun Moon Lake and Beitou Hot Springs are easily accessible from Taipei and do more than necessary to help even the most weary traveller find their zen. And for those of a more spiritual nature, a trip to visit the Longshan Temple would do wonders to refresh the body and mind. Kaohsiung is the largest metropolitan area in the south of Taiwan and is every bit as cosmopolitan as its capital with many beautiful religious edifices housed in the same vicinity as leisure facilities and open, nocturnal markets. Kenting, at the southern end of the country is the ideal spot for sunbathing and water sports and long walks surrounded by beautiful tropical scenery.
