Japan has requested for the forced labor ruling dispute with South Korea to be settled through arbitration by a third party
Seoul's foreign affairs ministry confirmed Monday, that Tokyo made such a request earlier in the day.
This comes as Seoul has not yet given a clear answer to Tokyo's request for talks on the matter.
In their 1965 agreement, which normalized diplomatic ties, Seoul and Tokyo agreed to hold talks or an arbitration if there is an issue regarding the agreement.
However, the arbitration by a third party cannot take place unless accepted by both sides.
Last year, South Korea's Supreme Court ordered Japanese companies to compensate the Koreans they forced to work for them before and during World War II.
But with the Japanese firms refusing to do so, the victims, earlier in the month, requested that the court force the sale of the firms' local assets.
