“Game of Thrones,” the HBO TV adaptation of the Song of Ice and Fire saga by George R. R. Martin, has taken the world by storm. It introduced dark adult fantasy drama to the masses, and sparked an unprecedented new interest in fire-breathing dragons. As the show’s finale approaches, all eyes are on the  dragons, the adopted children of the Mad Queen Daenery Targaryen, who have taken the world by storm. Rhaegal, Drogon, and Viseron are the last of the Targaryen dragons, but lately, they’ve been dropping like flies, adding to the list of the infamous “Game of Thrones” deaths. Whether it’s the spear of the Night King creating an Ice Dragon or a heavy duty scorpion, even with the help of Jon Snow, the Mother of Dragons is having a hard time keeping her children alive, but as the kill count rises, there’s still plenty to fear from the fearsome beasts.

But even beyond the “GoT” dragons, and the ASoIaF saga from GRRM, plenty of dragons have stalked the skies throughout the history of our species. From “Dragonheart” to “Dragonslayer,” “Skyrim” to “Willow,” those living in fantasy movies and TV lives in fear of an all out attack from a dragon, wyvern, drake or wyrm. Whether it’s Smaug from “The Hobbit,” Alduin or Vermithrax Pejorative, dragons are one of the most iconic monsters in movie and mythological history. As the “Game of Thrones” finale approaches, we’re still binging on every trailer, clip, scene and theory in hopes of having the ending explained for us, but given that the season is about to end, we don’t have long to wait until we learn the final fate of the dragons.
