Christen Samuels and Heather Fazzino both grew up in strong, opinionated, Italian families. Old school. Traditional. This made things a bit more strenuous for these women on their road to becoming a couple. In this first episode of the new season of The Creation Of Us, Christen and Heather share the stories of how they grew up, the people around them who were major influences, and the key moments each experienced that made them realize they were different.
Christen grew up as an only child and commuted back and forth from her grandmother’s house in Queens to her school on Long Island, always deeply involved in outside activities, first as a dancer and then in all different kinds of sports. She was, and still is, very close with her Mom who always encouraged her to try different things. “It didn’t matter what sport it was,” Christen recalled, “my Mom always said to do what makes you happy.”
Growing up in Westchester NY, Heather was also an only child and was deeply influenced by her Dad, a famous pop artist, and her paternal grandparents, also artists. She traveled anywhere and everywhere with her Dad and always thought she would follow in the family’s footsteps and become an artist. She was never much into the dresses and bows her southern-bred Mom suggested for her, preferring more of a tomboy look while playing many sports and spending time with her friends. “Being an only child, my friends were a huge part of my life,” she explained.
Throughout their developing years, both women had similar moments of confusion and anxiety about their sexuality. They frequently had times where they felt isolated, thought differently about the people and relationships they were drawn to, and didn’t fit in with their peers. Both attended Catholic High Schools where having non-traditional ideas about who they were attracted to just added to the stress of their daily lives.
