Find out how to deep fry in a pan without having to use a deep-fat fryer and discover a whole new world of delicious deep fryer recipes.

Deep frying can be a daunting challenge, especially if you don’t own a purpose-built deep-fat fryer, but that shouldn’t hold you back! This video from the Good Housekeeping Cookery team will take you through how to deep fry in a pan so that you can enjoy experimenting with new foods like french fries, doughnuts and tempura. You’ll soon be able to impress dinner guests with your knowledge of deep fryer recipes and all the gastronomic delights you’ll be able to serve.

All you need to get started is some basic equipment including a pan which comes with a lid (to cover it if it catches fire), a damp tea towel to hand to smother any flames and an oil for cooking. This video will also cover which is the best oil for frying and whether you can use olive oil for deep frying.

Before you get started learning how to deep fry in a pan, make sure you are taking sufficient safety precautions: make sure you never leave your pan unattended when cooking, leave at least a 10cm (4in) gap from level of oil to top of pan to allow for oil rising and bubbling during cooking, don’t get too close to oil, use long tongs or a slotted deep fry spoon and remove foods carefully, once you’ve finished cooking, don’t move pan of hot oil leave to cool completely before emptying.
