玉帝请来西天的如来佛祖，如来与悟空斗法，悟空翻不出如来掌心。如来将五指化作“五行山”，将悟空压在五行山下。天宫举行安天大会，欢庆收服妖猴，天下太平。五行山下，猴王孤寂冷清，历经雨雪风霜。五百年后，观音奉旨到东土寻找取经人。他变化为老和尚，在长安酒店中了解到高僧玄奘的身世，选他去取经。玄奘姓陈，父亲得中状元，携夫人赴仕途中被强盗所害，贼人掳去陈夫人，夫人生下遗腹子，忍痛将婴儿放置木板上，投入江流中。金山寺长老救起婴儿，取名江流儿。日后，成长为高僧玄奘。玄奘立志西天取经，唐太宗李世民与他结为兄弟，将观音所赠袈裟赐予玄奘。玄奘只身上路，夜宿猎户茅棚，想到明天就要跨越两界山，勾起思念故国之情，辗转难寐。
