ZF Transmission Bearing Liquid Nitrogen

Editor-In-Chief, Kevin Falvey, travelled to Italy and spent the day on the line, learning how to build a marine transmission with the world-leading team at ZF Friedrichshafen. The full feature story is rich with detail, but this video highlights one very, "cool," step in the production of a ZF marine gear intended for installation on a Seven Marine Outboard ( Process similar for inboard gears). The race for a bearing is submerged in liquid nitrogen, at -200 C. This causes the race to contract. It is installed, and as it warms to room temperature, the race expands in its housing, to fit with unmatched precision.
