00:02:30I'm 60 years old.
00:02:55I let you sleep in. Considering the amount you drank last night, you could have slept till your next birthday.
00:03:02Did you hear from Marianne at all?
00:03:04Not yet. Give her time, Max. She'll call.
00:03:09That came for you this morning.
00:03:17Sorry I couldn't be with you on this important day.
00:03:21Regards, Marianne.
00:03:24Why is she so mad at me? Was I such a rotten father?
00:03:28No, dear. Just a stubborn one.
00:03:32I better get to the office.
00:03:34You're not going to stay for breakfast?
00:03:36I'm 60 years old. Time is something I do not have a lot of.
00:03:40Fuck you, the violins.
00:04:09Bassline Real Estate? I'm sorry, Max isn't here right now.
00:04:26Mrs. Jablanski, there's no reason to cry. You have a lovely home, Max has told you many times.
00:04:33He'll be at the open house this Sunday. You don't even have to be there, okay? I'll have him call you.
00:04:40Poor Mrs. Jablanski.
00:04:42Forget poor Mrs. Jablanski. I'm the one that has to talk to her every day when she calls.
00:04:46Oh, Mr. Hudson called. You're showing him an apartment this morning at 10.30?
00:04:50Oh, yeah.
00:04:54Oh, if Adam Hastings calls, just tell him that I have to speak with him. He's been a hard guy to get a hold of. I've left three messages.
00:05:00Is Adam coming to town?
00:05:02Yeah, he's supposed to. I'm off to see Mr. and Mrs. Hudson. I'll be back about now.
00:05:06Bye.
00:05:07Good morning, Bassline Real Estate.
00:05:10Hello?
00:05:12Hello?
00:05:22I'm not a big fan of the angled ceilings in the bedroom.
00:05:24Yeah, but the rooms are quite large.
00:05:26Now, the current owner uses this room as a sitting area for his clients.
00:05:30There's no living quarters on the top floor, and no space here.
00:06:00Touch anything?
00:06:22No, I wasn't really trying. I just wanted to see how it handled.
00:06:26So, how are the books?
00:06:28Pretty good. That house you sold on Harrison Street certainly made a difference.
00:06:33Oh, the Maplewood house. That was a beauty. I'm going to kind of miss those folks.
00:06:39Oh, the kids grew up. The house got too big for them. Too empty.
00:06:45Well, I'm going to build a fire. There's nothing like a good fire on a cold night.
00:06:57Mary Ann's coming by next week. She called this afternoon.
00:07:10She apologized for missing your birthday, but she said she couldn't get off work.
00:07:15Oh, what's she working at now?
00:07:17She's a waitress in a friend's diner.
00:07:22You know what's odd about the Hastings? I really felt it last night at the party.
00:07:31Look what I did. I put glasses out for them. My mind's really fading with age.
00:07:38You're like wine, dear.
00:07:41Better with age.
00:07:42No, best left locked in the cellar.
00:07:48So, what's that I'm going to do with the house? I mean, it's been empty for nearly two years now.
00:07:54Well, I think he's going to sell it. I've been trying to get a hold of him.
00:07:58Maybe I'll do that right now.
00:08:01The Dow Jones continued its fall today. In fact, it was the biggest one-day decline in four months.
00:08:20Overseas, London is trading very soft due to the continued unrest in the Middle East.
00:08:25On the bright side, the oil and gas sector continues to enjoy its rise on concerns that...
00:08:42Hey, Adam, it's Max. I tried you earlier at home, but Catherine says you're still at the office.
00:08:47Let me know if you're coming to Bayside tomorrow. Bye.
00:08:55Bye.
00:09:14Late night, eh?
00:09:16Man, this is a tough market.
00:09:18I'll tell you, Adam, I don't understand your business.
00:09:21I'm beginning to think that I don't understand my business.
00:09:24Hey, Jimmy, can we see you in the back for a sec?
00:09:26Yeah, later.
00:09:36Hey, Adam, how's your hold now?
00:09:39Weak. I closed some options and lost the firm a bit.
00:09:44Don't let that scare you.
00:09:47It happens. You win some and you lose some.
00:09:52How's Sandra?
00:09:55I'd have to ask her to order.
00:09:58She still wants the divorce, eh?
00:10:01This week, anyway.
00:10:04Next week, maybe she'll want to get back together again.
00:10:10How are you and Catherine getting on?
00:10:13Good. Good. Thanks for asking.
00:10:16I'm sure we have our ups and downs, but...
00:10:19One second.
00:10:25I don't know about you, but that, my friend, I must call a night.
00:10:33And this is for you, Jimmy, my friend, and I'll see you tomorrow.
00:10:38I may not be in family business.
00:10:41What's that, an illness?
00:10:44I'll just go to town for a few days and clear up some stuff with my family's estate.
00:10:49All right.
00:10:51That's got to be rough.
00:10:55Well, you keep your chin up, eh?
00:11:13Why are you up so early?
00:11:16Figured I'd get an early start on the drive.
00:11:19You didn't even come to bed last night.
00:11:22Doesn't matter. I would have kept you up with my tossing and turning.
00:11:26I had another bad dream.
00:11:28About what?
00:11:30Same thing. Some old Victorian woman following me around.
00:11:34I'm sure I'm not the only one.
00:11:37I'm sure I'm not the only one.
00:11:40Some old Victorian woman following me around.
00:11:43I'm sure it had something to do with my unresolved repressed issues concerning my mother.
00:11:48Something like that.
00:11:51I could go with you, you know.
00:11:55Look, you don't want to go, so forget it. We've been over it.
00:11:59The place gives you the creeps.
00:12:02If it wasn't for my intuition, who knows how things might have turned out that Thanksgiving.
00:12:07For a few days, Max just needs me to sign off on the papers.
00:12:12I'll call you tonight.
00:12:17Drive safely.
00:12:37I'll call you tonight.
00:13:07...Metro with you on this rather cloudy and cool afternoon.

00:17:34Hi Adam!
00:17:35Hey Max, come on in.
00:17:38How was the drive?
00:17:39Ah… Not too bad, the traffic was surprisingly light.
00:17:42I saw you pull up so I thought I'd better race on over.
00:17:45on over. I'm glad you did. I hope that car didn't wake you this morning. Oh no no no we were up.
00:17:52I was going to turn the heat on so the pipes wouldn't burst. I suppose I could have turned
00:17:57the water off but I really couldn't bring myself to close the place down. Thank you for everything
00:18:04you've done. After the trial I really wasn't ready to deal with all this. It was difficult for
00:18:10everyone. Adam I'm sorry I don't know what to say. So you have all the papers? The buyer's
00:18:19lawyers are sending over some riders. I'll have them later today. How about I come by later on
00:18:26tonight and we can go over everything over coffee? I'll tell Barb you'll be around uh...
00:18:31Eight o'clock? That sounds good.
00:18:45And now sir you're done. Wow I can't believe I had the courage to go ahead and sell the place.
00:19:03The house has been in our family for years. It belonged to your grandfather. I think his name
00:19:08was Walter. Walter Hastings. It was time to let it go. Doris loved the garden. Gosh
00:19:17she'd even get excited about going to the garden store with me and picking up rose bushes.
00:19:24Doris and Ridge you were lovely people Adam. We miss them terribly. What happened was
00:19:33inconceivable. Not to speak ill of Robert but well I suppose now who gives a damn but
00:19:43he did seem a little odd in that last visit. That Thanksgiving weekend uh Catherine and I
00:19:48couldn't make it. She uh was ill. That's right. Anyway Robert and I met at the fence
00:19:55just as we usually did when he was in town just to gossip and catch up and a few days later
00:20:03it's a good thing for Catherine. Yes well it's hard to know what's going to happen from one day
00:20:07to the next. Yes well it's nice seeing you again Adam. Good night. I'll be up to bed in a moment.
00:20:13Don't forget to lock the back door before you come up.
00:20:21I just want to get rid of that house. Those ghosts.
00:20:25Adam do you have any idea why Robert returned home too?
00:20:29Do you have any idea why Robert did this? I visited Robert in prison after the trial
00:20:36and asked him the same question. He didn't say anything. He sat there. He just sat there.
00:20:47It's like one of those totem poles. Wolves, eagles, bears stacked on top of one another.
00:20:53You get the impression that they're thinking something, know something because of their
00:20:57solemn silence. But they're just chunks of wood. It's my brother sitting there
00:21:05but he just seemed empty. I'm telling you Max it was creepy.
00:21:15I'll get these uh papers to the folks in England. We should hear back in a few days.
00:21:19The move-in date will be in about six weeks.
00:21:23Adam you'll have to get the possessions and furniture out by then.
00:21:30Look it's late. Thanks for your help Max. Will you be staying at the Sleepy Pines Motel?
00:21:37I'll be staying in my old room. I came here to finally deal with everything Max.
00:21:43I came here to finally deal with everything Max.
00:21:48But if you hear any blood curdling screams coming from the place I'd appreciate if you called the
00:21:51police.
00:22:13So
00:22:44so
00:22:56Hey Catherine. Sorry I'm calling so late. Looks like Max has taken care of everything. I'll be
00:23:02able to put this place behind us soon. It's about time Adam. Yeah. Time to move on. Anyway um I'm
00:23:10tired. I'm going to bed. Oh did you see the charger for my cell phone? I can't find it. Yeah I think I
00:23:18saw it on the kitchen counter where you usually leave it. Okay it's not important. I don't know
00:23:24why I asked. You like to worry. Good night Adam. You too Catherine.
00:23:40So
00:23:57What happened to you Robert?
00:24:10That truly is a pity Mr. Hastings. Your home is absolutely beautiful. That's very kind of you to
00:24:16say. It's home. We've been here so long that we can't imagine living anywhere else. I'm done with
00:24:23work now and Doris just has to finish her year at the elementary school. Then we have these grand
00:24:28plans to build a guest house. You have so much space here in the new world. Back in England we're
00:24:33lucky if we have room enough for a small garden. Oh don't worry about it. I'm sure you'll be
00:24:38happy to have room enough for a small garden. Oh don't get her started. I'm planning to create a wonderful garden.
00:24:43Even one of those duck ponds with a little waterfall. Well Mrs. Hastings it looks as though
00:24:48you have guests arriving shortly. Oh just our two boys and our daughter-in-law. We're still waiting
00:24:53for the one to get married. The holiday is Thanksgiving if I'm not mistaken. A holiday where
00:24:59your people celebrate escaping from our people and making friends with the natives. Well I wouldn't
00:25:05have put it quite so directly but yes that pretty much sums it up. Only now the holiday is more about
00:25:11family and less about politics. So uh you're flying back home tonight. Yes our flight leaves at nine.
00:25:18It's going to be nice getting back and driving on the proper side of the road again.
00:25:26All this property is yours? Yep it belonged to my father. He believed in buying big property,
00:25:32small house. That way there'd always be room to expand. Well it was nice meeting you. I'm sorry
00:25:38what was your name again? Maybrick. Charles and Sarah Maybrick. Oh yes Maybrick. Kind of
00:25:44like the Mayflower. The ship that brought the pilgrims to... We're familiar with the story.
00:25:51Excuse me. Thank you for your hospitality Mr. Hastings. It's our pleasure. Have a safe trip.
00:25:57Oh dear well oh that's too bad. All right all righty then bye. Who was it? Adam. They might not be coming.
00:26:08Catherine's not feeling well. Oh dear what's the matter? Upset stomach. Might be the flu.
00:26:15Oh well Robert's still coming.
00:26:18Tell me what did you think about those Maybricks?
00:26:21Yeah we're familiar with the story. I thought she was a little uptight. Yeah just a tad.
00:26:47Your mother went back to Turkey this year after last Thanksgiving's disastrous ham.
00:26:54Sometimes it's nice to break with tradition. Well I enjoyed the ham. And for dessert we're
00:27:00having Marge Warren's famous lemon tart. Great. Mike's bringing it over later when it's fresh
00:27:05out of the oven. Um by the way where's Adam? He called earlier this afternoon and said Catherine
00:27:14wasn't feeling well. They may turn up but honey where's the camera? In the bedroom.
00:27:31I'll be right back. I have something to show you and dad.
00:27:44Robert what are you doing son? Well I was gonna wait for Adam but he'll be here soon enough.
00:27:59Oh my god Robert stop!
00:28:03Stop!
00:28:15Where are you Adam? Dinner's getting cold.
00:28:26Where are you Adam? Dinner's getting cold.
00:29:15So
00:29:30hello
00:29:33Who's there? Hello? Good morning. Good morning sir.
00:29:44Hello. Good morning. It certainly is. On a morning walk? Yes I was uh walking along the
00:29:53shore and I thought I saw a deer moving about here. Deer? Uh I haven't seen deer around here in years.
00:30:00Oh you see them from time to time. Not so many now as as in the past mind you. Uh you've uh
00:30:07just moved in here. I haven't seen you around before. It's my mother and father's house.
00:30:11I uh. Oh you're visiting for Thanksgiving? That's good of you. Family is very important.
00:30:16Something the younger generation seems to have forgotten. I suppose. Yes well your family has
00:30:22a lovely house. Interestingly um I used to live there long ago. Really? Yes long ago.
00:30:32I must confess I get a little nostalgic. I live in town now. Oh I'll leave you. I can see that
00:30:39you're shivering. Yeah I forgot how nippy it can be this time of year. Pleasure meeting you. I'll see
00:30:47you around.
00:31:10So
00:31:14so
00:31:32Morning. Max I'm just curious. Last night you said something about a house being in our family for
00:31:40100 years or so right? Yeah something like that. My father's father passed it on to him? Yeah that's
00:31:45right. Well I just met a man who was. Adam I've got to take Barbara to the dentist and we're running
00:31:50a tad late. I'm sorry. Maxwell. I will okay. Uh Adam there's something I'd like to tell you later
00:31:58today. There's something that you should know. Okay drop by later on. Will do.
00:32:04I hope you're going to tell him about Herbert Ross. I will tell him about Herbert
00:32:12but this is not the right time. I think the time couldn't be more appropriate.
00:32:22Now you promised not to try anything fancy right? I'm only here because the wife insisted I do
00:32:28something with this hair. I want you to remember that I still want to look ruggedly handsome when
00:32:34you're all finished. Michael dear this is a comb not a magic mark. Very funny.
00:32:46Adam Hastings is in town. That's a fact. I haven't seen him in years. Wonder how he's doing.
00:32:54Actually I wonder what he's doing. I hope he doesn't start swinging acts like his brother.
00:33:00Now Janice I don't think we need to hear that kind of talk at all.
00:33:05Well I'm sure it's what everyone's thinking.
00:34:23It's funny sleeping in our old room. Adam still snores. It'll be different when his
00:34:44new girlfriend starts coming to the house for family gatherings. Oh well I guess we're growing up.
00:34:53You were the sensitive one Robert. Giving a journal of all our family homecomings.
00:35:12One friend I walked along the beach today hoping to clear my mind of the thoughts that have been
00:35:16troubling me. Appears that they come out of nowhere but at the same time I know that they are mine.
00:35:23Hello.
00:35:36Yeah it's fine.
00:35:54So
00:36:14Adam oh I'm sorry I didn't mean to startle you. The door was open and I could have phoned but
00:36:19your phone's not connected. It's okay I guess I'm a little jumpier than I thought.
00:36:23I'm just back with Barb. No cavities. The appointment went a little quicker than I
00:36:27thought it would be. Phone's working by the way. So soon? It was this morning that I called them
00:36:32to connect it when I thought she might be staying longer. Well I can see that you're busy. Max you
00:36:38were going to tell me something this morning and judging by Barb's expression it seemed pretty
00:36:42important. Oh right um that's why I came over. I wanted to meet somebody. Meet somebody? Her name
00:36:48is Judith. She runs the local bookstore. I think she can answer your questions better than I can.
00:36:54Okay. We'll see you later tonight. Uh Max wait a sec.
00:37:00Oh happy birthday. Well well thank you Adam. We'll see you tonight.
00:37:18So
00:37:48hello there Adam. Hey Mr. Warren how you doing? Oh okay I was just on my way home for dinner and
00:38:00I saw a light on through the trees. And you were just checking it out? It's what policemen do.
00:38:05The house has been pretty well empty other than Max dropping in from time to time to check up on
00:38:10things. Ah would you smell that salt air? I don't get that in town you know. Well I do. It's not the
00:38:17same as being out here. I just ordered a pizza. Do you want to come in for a bit? No no no dinner's
00:38:22waiting on the table. Uh like I said I just saw a light on and it seemed kind of out of the ordinary.
00:38:28Well as you can see everything's fine. So how's work? Catherine? Both fine although one of them
00:38:36is beginning to drive me crazy. So you gonna be here long? A few days detective. Listen Adam
00:38:45Marge can set another plate for dinner. It'd be no trouble. For dessert we're having her famous
00:38:51lemon pie tart and tangy. I already ordered a pizza but I just may take you up on your offer
00:38:57later on this week. Adam do me a favor will you? Lock your doors at night or if you happen to go
00:39:07out during the day. Now there's there's nothing to be scared of really it's just that this isn't
00:39:11the same town you grew up in. So will you do me that one favor? I'll lock my doors. Good boy.
00:39:23Nice to have you home.
00:39:29This is Judith Meyers. She bought the lighthouse bookstore and she's also written some books on
00:39:33the history of Bayside. In other words your local busybody. And Judith this is Adam Hastings.
00:39:38Pleased to meet you. Pleased to meet you. I asked Judith to join us because she may be able to
00:39:43shed a little light on the previous owner's history. I see you have the fire going so let's
00:39:48sit down and have a chat. I'm glad to be here. I'm glad to be here. I'm glad to be here.
00:39:55And this one's for bottom feeders. It's designed to skim along the bottom and occasionally give off a
00:40:06glimmer to catch the eye. Tell her about the time you hooked the big hammerhead shark.
00:40:10Just offshore here. Oh I thought it'd be another day. That was the one I was happy that got away.
00:40:15Adam thank you very much for my birthday present. It's a beauty. I'm going to do a lot of fishing
00:40:19this summer. Oh it's your birthday? I didn't know. I'm sorry. Happy birthday. I would have brought
00:40:25you a book. I kept it to myself. Who wants to advertise their old age? You're not that old.
00:40:30Thank you Adam. Max tells me you're planning on selling. It's sold actually. The Mayberries
00:40:36and Mayflowers or whoever should be your new neighbors soon. Max graciously and expertly
00:40:41handled all the details for me. That's a shame. Really is a lovely property but given the loss
00:40:47of your mother and father it doesn't really surprise me. Frankly I am a little surprised
00:40:52you can spend the night in this place. It would give me the creeps. Oh I'm sorry that was cruel.
00:41:00I'll be the first to admit I'm a little on edge. My first night back when I heard the trees
00:41:05scraping on the window I thought it was Robert clawing his way back in to finish the job.
00:41:11Judith, why don't you tell Adam a little bit about Herbert Ross. Why? What does he have? Well let Judith tell the story.
00:41:25Well where to begin. Herbert Ross lived in this house with his wife Beatrice from
00:41:321910 to 1919. He owned a slaughterhouse in town and the family was rather wealthy.
00:41:39Herbert was important in the community because of the jobs he provided but he had the misfortune
00:41:43of being disliked for that same reason. I gather it was a combination of sour grapes on some
00:41:48townspeople's behalf and maybe Herbert showed his wealth a little too conspicuously.
00:41:55His wife Beatrice on the other hand was cherished for her kindness and generosity. Well a woman of
00:42:01her status weren't inclined to work in those days but she involved herself in charitable causes
00:42:05mostly to do with the town parish. The Rosses had one child, a boy, but unfortunately
00:42:13tragedy struck the family when the young fellow drowned in the river while playing with other
00:42:17children at a church picnic. As you might expect the Rosses were devastated. Well a few years passed
00:42:24and Beatrice began to become more and more involved with local children. You know teaching
00:42:29Sunday school, getting involved in school plays and the like. I imagine she was trying to get over
00:42:34her own loss by becoming sort of a mother to the rest of the children in the community.
00:42:39Now the controversy started when Herbert took a few of the children on a tour of the slaughterhouse.
00:42:46I guess he thought it would be good for the children to find out where meat came from but
00:42:50needless to say the children were horribly upset. I can imagine. Here's where the story gets strange.
00:42:59On that tour one of the children didn't return home and because Herbert was the last to be seen
00:43:04with the lad suspicion fell to him but before the police could start poking around the parents
00:43:10dropped the topic mainly suggesting that the boy ran away. Odd silence. Was the boy ever found?
00:43:17Never. This was in July 1917 that the children began disappearing. By the end of the disappearances
00:43:24which was August 1919, 27 children were missing. Everyone suspected Herbert Ross but no one could
00:43:30prove anything. Where did the children go? Did he grind them up in his meat? Come on now, now you're
00:43:36being ridiculous. No one knows. But why? Why did he do it? Revenge. To get back at the community he
00:43:45blamed for allowing the accident to happen. Who knows? Anyway one hot night in August 1919, well
00:43:52the last summer of the disappearances, a fire burned the slaughterhouse to the ground. Neighbors
00:43:57heard the animals shrieking for miles. It was the hottest most humid summer on record. The town
00:44:03stank of death for weeks. Well it was believed that a few workers set the place ablaze to try
00:44:08and drive Herbert out of town. The rumors took their toll on poor Beatrice. She confronted
00:44:13Herbert publicly at a church picnic. According to the police reports she was near hysterics.
00:44:19Well their family doctor conveniently dismissed it as heat stroke and that was the last time Beatrice
00:44:25was ever seen. Soon after Herbert sold the house to Walter Hastings. My grandfather.
00:44:33And what about Herbert? I don't know. I think he left town. And where is Beatrice? Let me guess.
00:44:42She's buried somewhere on this property. You could be right. But let's be frank, all of this is just
00:44:49rumors. Children do run away. People do move. And town records were rather patchy back then.
00:44:56And even if the children were murdered or even if Beatrice was quietly dispatched,
00:45:02absolutely nothing, nothing was ever linked to Herbert Ross.
00:45:07Well Judith, I think you frightened Adam with enough ghost stories for one night.
00:45:11I saw him. I met Herbert Ross. I know you did. He can't harm you. He's been dead a long time.
00:45:21Have you not heard of ghosts? Yes I have. I remember being little hearing about the ghosts
00:45:26lurking about the woods but not all of this. Beatrice being murdered. Kids disappearing.
00:45:31All of it. I saw Herbert from time to time. That was a few years ago. What's he lurking about now
00:45:36for? Ghosts. Who can figure them out? Good night.
00:45:56Come on Robert, give me some sort of clue.
00:46:00What happened to you? I'm tired of reading about every damn family homecoming.
00:47:36Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
00:48:06so
00:48:31did you mix up the apartment
00:48:33Did you get the wrong door? I've done it once or twice myself.
00:49:33So, how was lunch?
00:50:03Hello, Marianne.
00:50:06Happy belated birthday, Dad.
00:50:09You don't call? You never write?
00:50:11I'm here now.
00:50:12I know, I know. I'm sorry.
00:50:15How have you been?
00:50:16All right.
00:50:18Things are better. I'm working at a friend's diner in Midtown.
00:50:21Going to the auto-audition.
00:50:24Not getting anything, but you know, not giving up.
00:50:28So, how long are you staying?
00:50:30A few days.
00:50:32Thought I could stay for Thanksgiving dinner.
00:50:34Well, that would be nice.
00:50:36Wow, that's tomorrow. How time flies.
00:50:40Would you like to stay in your old room?
00:50:43It's nice of you, Dad, but I ran into Cindy. She said I could stay with her.
00:50:48Delivery.
00:50:59So, the Hastings house finally sold?
00:51:01Well, I'm trying, but the buyer's lawyers just sent me another package.
00:51:04It appears that they want to move in earlier.
00:51:06Is that odd?
00:51:08Yeah, a little.
00:51:13Marianne, I am glad that you came.
00:51:15It means an awful lot to me.
00:51:18I'm glad I'm here too, Max.
00:51:21Let's just see if we can get along for the next few days, huh?
00:51:25I'll be in my best behavior.
00:51:27I'm just waiting for Cindy to come back from lunch and then we can go home.
00:51:32Shall I fix us something now?
00:51:44Say, Mike, I was wondering, is Adam Hastings back in town?
00:51:48Sure is. Just back for a few days to sell the family house.
00:51:52I thought so.
00:51:53Funny, I saw him wandering around downtown the other day and I could have sworn it was his brother Robert.
00:51:58Was he limping?
00:51:59I don't think so.
00:52:01Well, I shot Robert twice in the leg.
00:52:04He walks with a limp now.
00:52:06Anyway, he's locked up away over in Marion County Prison.
00:52:10And if he ever gets out, I'll be among the first to know. You can be sure of that.
00:52:14Okay, just thought I'd check.
00:52:44Robert again spoke to me.
00:52:54It's become clear to me that the man is quite mad.
00:52:58How could I be so stupid to let him get to me?
00:53:01Now it's too late.
00:53:03I do things that I can't remember.
00:53:07It was a few weeks before he killed Mom and Dad.
00:53:13It was a grave after all.
00:56:14So you've discovered my little secret.
00:56:18Nasty business that was.
00:56:21So this is Beatrice.
00:56:29Who are you?
00:56:33That's impossible.
00:56:35Herbert Ross would be over a hundred years old.
00:56:37And yet here I am.
00:56:40It had to be done. I had no choice.
00:56:44Your brother understood what had to be done.
00:56:48It's a pity you weren't here that weekend.
00:56:51It would have made things simpler.
00:56:57So the children?
00:57:01Are the children here too?
00:57:06Why am I here?
00:57:09What do I want?
00:57:11I want what any man wants.
00:57:14To look after his family.
00:57:16To protect his reputation.
00:57:18His dignity.
00:57:20You of all people should understand.
00:57:23The sins of the past are to remain in the past.
00:57:27Aren't you haunted by Robert's deeds?
00:57:30Don't you wish they could be forgotten?
00:57:33Because you and I both know.
00:57:36Some things can never be forgiven.
00:57:39There are a few more around here by the way.
00:57:44Dear.
00:57:46Charming.
00:57:47Timid creatures.
00:58:07Adam.
00:58:08Mr. Warren.
00:58:09Hi.
00:58:11I didn't hear you pull in.
00:58:12What's up?
00:58:13What are you doing?
00:58:14Planting a tree?
00:58:17No.
00:58:19I'm covering a stack of firewood by the side of the house.
00:58:22Covered in sand over the years.
00:58:25Adam, I've heard a few stories in my time.
00:58:27And before I finally retire, I'll likely hear a few more.
00:58:31Look, I don't know what you're implying.
00:58:33What's that?
00:58:34Max, it's been filling your head with a lot of stories about bodies being buried out here in these woods.
00:58:39Some two dozen children was the last rumor I heard.
00:58:43Well, rest assured, those stories you've been hearing are exactly that.
00:58:47Stories.
00:58:48There are no bodies buried here in these woods.
00:58:50I know that.
00:58:51Good.
00:58:52I just didn't want you to fret yourself, that's all.
00:58:54I saw that shovel in your hand and it got me thinking.
00:58:57Crazy, huh?
00:58:59Adam.
00:59:01I came here to tell you I guess it would be kind of some bad news.
00:59:06Your brother's escaped from prison.
00:59:08Just came over the car radio a few hours ago.
00:59:11There's nothing to be alarmed about.
00:59:13I thought you should know, that's all.
00:59:15And don't worry, we'll get him.
00:59:17We usually find our escapees within 24 hours.
00:59:20They're so damn scared and cold they can't wait to be arrested.
00:59:24Somehow I find that hard to believe.
00:59:26Doesn't matter.
00:59:27What matters is our boys in Marin County will nab him.
00:59:30How long has he been out?
00:59:33About five days.
00:59:35Well, it happened way outside our jurisdiction, so of course,
00:59:39local authorities, meaning us, weren't advised until it became a...
00:59:43Adam.
00:59:45How'd you like to stay over with Marge and I until this business can be taken care of, huh?
00:59:50You can have Mike Jr.'s old room.
00:59:52He can't make it home.
00:59:53He's spending the holiday with the bimbo, that new girlfriend of his.
00:59:57I'm not running away.
00:59:58Nobody's asking you to run away.
00:59:59I'm asking you if you'd like to spend some time with Marge and me, that's all.
01:00:04I'll be fine.
01:00:09I'll be fine.
01:00:14Okay.
01:00:29I can't leave here.
01:00:34Can you help me, Beatrice?
01:00:59So what brings you here? Another ghost story?
01:01:01I'm curious to learn a bit more about Herbert Ross.
01:01:04He was quite the character.
01:01:06I want to know what he did when he left... left the house.
01:01:09I need to know where he went, what he did.
01:01:11Okay.
01:01:12Um, I'll see what I can dig up.
01:01:14I'm pretty sure he left the country, but I'll try to find out for sure.
01:01:18Um, not to be nosy, Adam, but what do you think?
01:01:21Well, I don't know.
01:01:23I don't know where he left the country, but I'll try to find out for sure.
01:01:26Um, not to be nosy, Adam, but why the interest in this man?
01:01:30Let's just say that I want to trace a bit of the history to my family's house.
01:01:33I'd be happy to pay you for your research.
01:01:35Oh, would you like me to see what I can find out about his wife, Beatrice, as well?
01:01:39No, that's okay.
01:01:41I think I've got her covered.
01:01:43Thanks again. I appreciate it.
01:01:45No problem.
01:01:53Whee!
01:01:55Whee!
01:01:57Whee!
01:01:59Whee!
01:02:01Whee!
01:02:03Whee!
01:02:11It sure is quiet out here.
01:02:13I think I forgot what traffic sounds like.
01:02:17Though I must admit, if I was here alone, I'd be kind of scared.
01:02:20It's so quiet.
01:02:22You get used to it.
01:02:24But I know what you mean.
01:02:26It can be pretty spooky in a thunderstorm.
01:02:29Yeah.
01:02:31Hey, I remember one summer, lightning struck that front gate.
01:02:35Do you remember that?
01:02:37I was sitting in my room doing my homework, and I looked up, and zap!
01:02:41I don't mind the lightning.
01:02:44For me, it's the thunder.
01:02:46Yeah, that's scary.
01:02:48Frankly, I'd be more afraid of the friends you hang out with than the big city.
01:02:53But I guess that's the price you have to pay to be in the arts.
01:02:59I know you wanted me to stay in this miserable nowhere town.
01:03:03Even work at the real estate office so you can keep an eye on me.
01:03:06But no, I couldn't do that.
01:03:08I think you made your point.
01:03:15Hello, Adam.
01:03:17Hi, Marianne.
01:03:19Staying a few days?
01:03:21Yeah, just to settle up in the house, say hi to a few friends.
01:03:24Well, that's nice. I was just leaving.
01:03:27Marianne.
01:03:29You couldn't let sleeping dogs lie, could you?
01:03:33Maybe this isn't the right time.
01:03:35No, no, go ahead. How bad could it be?
01:03:38You need to stop the deal, Max.
01:03:41Maybe you can call the courier company and get the papers back.
01:03:44Did you call Maverick's lawyer? Tell him my prices shot up after I got another appraisal?
01:03:48Adam, I got a document this morning. They want to move in even earlier.
01:03:51But I will give them a call.
01:03:53For God's sake, Maxwell.
01:03:55It's like five in the morning over there.
01:03:58Can I think, please?
01:04:06What's the problem?
01:04:08I got a letter from Charles Maverick.
01:04:10I found it at my father's desk.
01:04:12I'm asking if my father wants to sell his house.
01:04:14Don't you think it's kind of funny that some people from across this ocean
01:04:17have a sudden interest in buying my family's house?
01:04:20Adam, we have tourists here all the time.
01:04:22They may have come on vacation and thought they would like to live here.
01:04:25Maybe everybody around the bay got a similar letter.
01:04:28Did you?
01:04:30Well, no. No, we didn't.
01:04:32Still, I don't see anything sinister about this.
01:04:35Do what you can, Max. I need out of this deal.
01:04:39Adam, if you bump into Marianne, tell her to come home.
01:05:10Oh!
01:05:12Catherine, you scared the hell out of me.
01:05:14I'm sorry. I tried the front door, but it was locked, so I went around back.
01:05:17Did you just walk by this window?
01:05:19I guess so. Why?
01:05:22I'm never glad to see you.
01:05:26It's been a long few days.
01:05:28For me, too.
01:05:30Frankly, I'm beginning to get a little tired.
01:05:32I'm going to go to bed.
01:05:34I'm going to go to bed.
01:05:36For me, too.
01:05:38Frankly, I'm beginning to get a little creeped out.
01:05:44What are you doing here?
01:05:46I just felt like I should be here.
01:05:48You know how I get these impressions about things.
01:05:51I told Max we're not going to sell the place.
01:05:53I know we should have discussed it first, but I feel we're sitting on a mystery.
01:05:57How do you mean?
01:05:59It must be Judith.
01:06:01She owns a local bookstore in town.
01:06:03I asked her to look into a few things for me.
01:06:11Catherine!
01:06:13I managed to find a few things. Not much, mind you.
01:06:18Oh, no. That's not good.
01:06:20What is it?
01:06:22It's just my gas bill.
01:06:24I better get that paid in a hurry.
01:06:28Um...
01:06:30I came across a passenger manifest for the Great Sea Steam Ships
01:06:33showing a Herbert Ross traveling with a woman by the name of Rachel Ravenwood.
01:06:37This couple arrived in Liverpool, England.
01:06:40I wanted to find out what happened to them,
01:06:42so I phoned a friend in Liverpool, and he went over to the borough's library.
01:06:46He came across a marriage certificate for a Rachel Ravenwood
01:06:50and a Herbert Maybrick dated four months after they arrived.
01:06:54Now, maybe this Rachel, whoever she is,
01:06:57met up with another gentleman named Herbert after traveling with Herbert Ross,
01:07:01but I don't think so.
01:07:03Oh, and I found those photos of Beatrice.
01:07:07Anyway, in England.
01:07:09Have you ever heard of a company called Maybrick Meats?
01:07:12They're a meatpacking company. They've been around for about 80 years.
01:07:15I think it's a fair bet that the butcher Herbert Ross
01:07:18became the butcher Herbert Maybrick.
01:07:24Who else could it be but Beatrice Ross?
01:07:53I'm telling you, Herbert killed her and buried her in the woods beside the house.
01:07:57God knows who else is buried back there.
01:08:00Although I have a pretty good idea.
01:08:02And you spoke to Herbert?
01:08:04His ghost. And so did Robert.
01:08:07Herbert got Robert to kill Mom and Dad,
01:08:09possessed him, I don't know, whatever evil spirits do to the unsuspecting living.
01:08:14Look, I know it sounds crazy.
01:08:16I don't think it's crazy.
01:08:18Like I was trying to tell you, I saw Beatrice.
01:08:21Or her ghost, rather.
01:08:23In fact, I think it was Beatrice who warned me about that Thanksgiving.
01:08:26I didn't have food poisoning, you knew that.
01:08:29I was just scared of coming here.
01:08:31And I think it was Beatrice who warned me in a dream.
01:08:33I just didn't know it at the time.
01:08:35And I just saw her recently.
01:08:37Yeah, she's been dropping by to see me too.
01:08:42If Herbert Ross really changed his name to Herbert Maybrick,
01:08:45The Maybricks from England who want to come here are Ross' descendants.
01:08:51What do they want with this place?
01:08:53They didn't want your mother and father digging around the woods.
01:08:56A guest house and a garden.
01:09:09Hi, Cindy.
01:09:10Hi, Max.
01:09:11Is Marianne there?
01:09:13Staying with me?
01:09:14Oh, she told me she was staying there.
01:09:16I guess I must have misunderstood.
01:09:20If you see Marianne, would you tell her to come home?
01:09:25Hello, Cindy?
01:09:27Hello?
01:09:30This is where Mother wanted to put her new garden.
01:09:32Right beside the guest house.
01:09:34They would have found Beatrice.
01:09:36And the others.
01:09:37Dozens of children.
01:09:38Children?
01:09:40More of Herbert Ross' victims.
01:09:43And you heard Judith.
01:09:44These Maybricks are big now.
01:09:46They didn't want a family scandal.
01:09:48Who knows if these butchers are still taking their work home with them.
01:09:58Adam?
01:10:00Is that Judith's car?
01:10:05Judith?
01:10:08Judith, are you all right?
01:10:13Come on.
01:10:37Adam?
01:10:39Adam, answer me!
01:10:43We have to leave.
01:10:45What's the matter?
01:10:46Was there an accident?
01:10:49Catherine.
01:10:50Judith was killed.
01:10:52Killed?
01:10:53Who? Why?
01:10:54I don't know.
01:10:56Let's just go to Max's.
01:10:58We can call an ambulance and the police from there.
01:11:00Why can't we just call from here?
01:11:03Adam?
01:11:04We have to leave the house.
01:11:12Let's go.
01:11:33What the hell's going on?
01:11:35Judith was killed.
01:11:36Killed?
01:11:37Yeah, she came over tonight with some information about Herbert Ross.
01:11:40The Maybricks were planning a little homecoming, Max.
01:11:42Except the Maybricks were descendants of Herbert Ross.
01:11:45Since the Maybricks bought the house back,
01:11:47this is a field full of bodies out back.
01:11:49Bodies?
01:11:51Forget it, Adam.
01:11:52The phone's dead.
01:11:54I don't understand.
01:11:55Who killed Judith?
01:11:56Robert.
01:11:57Don't you see?
01:11:58He came back to finish the job that he started.
01:12:00She knew too much.
01:12:01And now so do we.
01:12:02It's dead, isn't it?
01:12:06Where's Barb?
01:12:07Barb's upstairs sleeping.
01:12:08I was reading.
01:12:09Barb, it seems like we've got ourselves into a little...
01:12:11Forget it.
01:12:12I heard everything.
01:12:15It looks like we have company.
01:12:18Well, if he tries to break in here,
01:12:21we'll take care of him.
01:12:22The thieves?
01:12:23Yeah, right.
01:12:24I think we've seen one too many horror movies, Max.
01:12:26That's what he's supposed to be using.
01:12:29Look.
01:12:30My dad had a gun in the bedroom.
01:12:32It's probably still there.
01:12:33You weren't going back there.
01:12:34You're right.
01:12:35You are.
01:12:37No, look, that was a joke.
01:12:38I don't know where he's gone,
01:12:39but he thinks we're still in here.
01:12:41I'll slip out the front door to the house.
01:12:43I'll come back with the gun.
01:12:45That'll give Robert something to think about.
01:12:47I think we should just get in one of our cars
01:12:48and drive out of here.
01:12:49Hang on.
01:12:50I'm with Max.
01:12:51No.
01:12:52Don't you think that's exactly what Robert will have thought?
01:12:54He's probably slashed all the tires by now.
01:12:57That's just the sort of bastard he is.
01:13:00I'm going to get that gun.
01:13:02I'll be right back.
01:13:03You'll know it's me because I'll knock three times.
01:13:05What do you want us to do?
01:13:07Hide.
01:13:11You'll be okay.
01:13:12Maxwell, give me one of those knives.
01:13:38Okay.
01:14:04Open up!
01:14:06Hey, Dad.
01:14:07Look, we've just got to figure this out.
01:14:08Shut up.
01:14:09You shut up, you bastard.
01:14:10Shut up!
01:14:12There's a man up there.
01:14:13He's going to slaughter us all.
01:14:14Please be quiet.
01:14:16Hi, Catherine.
01:14:17You there, my insane dad?
01:14:18It's Robert.
01:14:19He's returned home.
01:14:20Oh, my God.
01:14:35Oh, my God.
01:15:05Oh, my God.
01:15:23Hello, Robert.
01:15:28Stop it, Robert.
01:15:29It's not you.
01:15:32Nothing can be gained by killing me.
01:15:34A lot of people know what's buried in the woods.
01:15:35It's not a secret.
01:15:37You hear that, Herbert?
01:15:40Just go.
01:15:44I don't hate you for what happened.
01:15:47You're my brother.
01:15:51I can't forgive you, either.
01:15:56Just go.
01:15:58I'll tell anyone who will listen what happened
01:16:00and do my best to help you.
01:16:02How can anything ever be the same again?
01:16:33Mr. Warren?
01:16:37Where are you?
01:16:39Mr. Warren!
01:16:48Robert!
01:17:03Robert!
01:17:15I was wondering where that went.
01:17:19I heard the shots.
01:17:21Who got it?
01:17:24Robert?
01:17:27Dead?
01:17:28I hope so.
01:17:30I already called it in.
01:17:32We've got other officers on the way.
01:17:35I, uh...
01:17:37I saw Judith down the lane.
01:17:40I'm sorry.
01:17:59I'm sorry.
01:18:29I'm sorry.
01:18:59I'm sorry.
01:19:30So you're off.
01:19:32Yeah.
01:19:34Thanks for your help, Max.
01:19:35Well, that's what friends and family do.
01:19:40I gave Mr. Warren the address of Charles and Sarah Maybrook in Liverpool.
01:19:44I don't know if they have any connection to all this, but it's worth checking out.
01:19:48No, I heard from the lawyers this morning.
01:19:50They're no longer interested in buying.
01:19:52No kidding.
01:19:54I also gave them the map that Robert drew of the property.
01:19:56There might be some commotion over the next little while as the police do their work.
01:20:01God, what a job.
01:20:04So, what are we going to do about this place?
01:20:08Adam?
01:20:10Come on, Adam. It's time to go home.
01:20:26I'm sorry.
01:20:56I'm sorry.
