ED summons Punjab Revenue Minister Majithia in Rs 6,000 crore synthetic drug case

In a major development on the eve of the Winter Session of the Punjab Assembly, which could also have a bearing on the relations between the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal, the Enforcement Directorate has summoned State Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia in the Rs. 6,000 crore international synthetic drug case.
Mr. Majithia is also the president of Youth Wing of SAD and younger brother of Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, the wife of Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal.
Mr. Majithia confirmed that he had received the summons over phone on December 19-20 and has been asked to appear before the Enforcement Directorate at its Jalandhar office at 11 a.m. on Friday. He assured that he would fully cooperate with the investigations into the racket which was first detected nearly a year ago.
Sources said the Enforcement Directorate has prepared a questionnaire with around 50 questions, which would be put up to Mr. Majithia.
The lid was blown off the racket by Punjab Police when on January 5 it arrested a Canadian national of Indian origin, Devinder Singh, whose questioning revealed that precursor chemicals Ketamine, Ephedrine and Pseudoephedrine were being diverted from the medicinal sectors and procured by those running the racket from Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Then these were being smuggled to Canada, where these chemicals were being processed into synthetic drugs by Chinese and Vietnamese nationals.
Mr. Majithia’s name first surfaced in the case when the alleged kingpin in the racket, Jagdish Singh Bhola, who was a dismissed Deputy Superintendent of Police and an international wrestler, claimed that the youth Akali leader and Damanvir Singh, who was the son of the then Punjab Jail Minister, Swaran Singh Phillaur, had assisted him in procuring synthetic chemicals and precursors from owners of pharmaceutical units in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
