Ajit Singh demands second memorial for father

At his lowest moment till then, Ajit Singh in 1998 did not know that recovery could be so swift. He had just been trounced in his Baghpat bastion by an unheralded Sompal Shastri riding the Vajpayee wave and the jat strongman was still to come to terms with the defeat. Then came the time to vacate his bungalow and word spread that "Chaudhary saab" was set to be evicted from his 18, Akbar Road residence.

The news of the imminent departure of "Chaudhary saab" from his house triggered sympathy among his voters, loyalists of his father and farmer leader Charan Singh. Old timers recall a sense of regret, even guilt, for "teaching Singh a lesson" for failing to bring roads and development to the constituency.

Singh's demand that the residence in question -- 12, Tughlak Road - be turned into a memorial for his late father gives away the political gambit.
